Jeremy Pope’s Short ‘God Is Good’ Acquired by The Criterion Channel (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for unraveling the nuances of autobiographical storytelling, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by Jeremy Pope’s “God Is Good.” Having traversed the complexities of identity and societal expectations in my own life journey, I can resonate with Pope’s poignant exploration of masculinity, vulnerability, and self-discovery through the lens of a Black queer man in America.

Jeremy Pope’s short “God Is Good” has been acquired by The Criterion Channel.

Drawing inspiration from his debut EP titled “Last Name: Pope,” the actor-singer himself penned the script and takes on the leading role in a movie that was helmed by director C Prinz and boasts choreography by Parris Goebel.

The movie is described as a fusion of memoir, soliloquy, absurdism, and dance, with Pope delving into themes such as masculinity, fragility, and societal constraints from the perspective of a Black gay man in the U.S. Having been brought up by a minister and a professional bodybuilder for a father, Pope utilizes his background to tackle internalized homophobia and define his identity.

As a film critic, I’ve often found myself at odds with societal expectations of masculinity, particularly as a Black man. Throughout my life, I’ve chosen to explore and challenge the harmful beliefs and behaviors that don’t foster growth in me. This quest is rooted in my desire to embrace my strength, vulnerability, and how these qualities shape my thoughts and feelings.

He expresses his firm conviction that it’s acceptable for him to maintain a spiritual bond with something beyond himself, regardless of the opinions of any churches, religious texts, or individuals who hold faith-based beliefs,” he further notes.

According to Prinz, “This movie evolved from a brief two-minute idea into a grand 20-minute masterpiece, pushing boundaries in genre-blending cinema. Its creation has ignited a lifelong pursuit of creativity within me.

Representatives for Jeremy Pope are WME, IMG, Door 24, and attorney Michael Auerbach. C Prinz is represented by Smuggler, while Parris Goebel’s representatives include CAA, IMG, and Go 2 Talent Agency.
