Contrary to any rumors, this isn’t a questionable sequel to “Madame Web” featuring Jennifer Lopez, exploring spiders in the Amazon and eventually meeting her demise. Instead, it’s an exciting revival! Jennifer Lopez is set to star in the musical adaptation of the timeless 20th-century tale, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” hitting theaters this October. With Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jennifer Lopez all promoting their respective projects simultaneously, the anticipation is palpable!
Jennifer Lopez experienced a challenging 2024. Her autobiographical film, “This Is Me … Now: A Love Story,” received unfavorable reviews, her tour didn’t garner impressive numbers, and she finalized her divorce from Ben Affleck. However, in 2025, she’s poised for a remarkable comeback. Below, discover all the details about Jennifer Lopez in the enchanting world of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.

The first trailer for the musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman” was released on June 5th. Jennifer Lopez plays Aurora, who is dressed in full glamour from the world of musical theater, complete with fedoras, blonde wigs, and a striking gold gown. However, her beauty stands in stark contrast to scenes depicting two Argentine prisoners, portrayed by Diego Luna from “Andor” and Tonatiuh (“Carry On”). After discovering a poster for the “Spider Woman” in his cell, it becomes apparent that Tonatiuh’s character, Luis Molina, is using the story of Jennifer Lopez as an escape from his own reality.
What do we know about the adaptation?
I had the pleasure of being part of the journey that began with Manuel Puig’s novel, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” published in 1976. This captivating story was later transformed into the critically acclaimed film, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” released in 1985, which brought William Hurt, who portrayed Luis, the Best Actor accolade at the 1986 Oscars. Fast forward to 1993, and the story found new life as a musical adaptation bearing the same name. In this version, Chita Rivera took on the role of Aurora, with songs penned by the brilliant duo behind “Cabaret,” John Kander and Fred Ebb, and a script written by Terrence McNally. This musical also received recognition, winning the prestigious Best Musical award at the Tony Awards.
As a passionate film aficionado, I’d like to share my excitement about a captivating tale that unfolds, following the lives of two individuals: Luis (Tonatiuh) and Valentin Arregui Paz (Luna), who find themselves in the challenging circumstances of incarceration within Argentina. Luis, a man with a unique identity as a gay man, is serving his time for a charge related to “corrupting” a minor, while Valentin stands accused of political dissidence. To cope with the harsh realities of his daily life, Luis often escapes into a world of music and imagination, envisioning Aurora in various enchanting musical sequences. The timeless masterpiece “Where You Are,” a staple from the annals of musical theater, echoes through the trailer for this fresh adaptation.
When is it coming out?
The film “Kiss of the Spider Woman” had its initial screening at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 27th. Critic Bilge Ebiri from Vulture praised Tonatiuh’s performance, calling it “career-defining,” yet expressed that the film doesn’t quite capture his energy. Audience members like us will have the chance to form our own opinions when it hits theaters on October 10th. So, get ready to dance!
