Jennifer Lawrence’s Motherquake Erupts in Die, My Love

In her latest film, “Die, My Love,” Jennifer Lawrence has made a significant impact on the Richter Scale, marking new territory. Although she’s been playing mother and wife roles since her early 20s, both on-screen and in real life, this time around, Lawrence delves deep into the complexities of motherhood, portraying its terrifying, unsettling, and traumatic aspects. Directed by Lynne Ramsay, “Die, My Love” generated a lot of buzz at Cannes in May, with Mubi securing distribution rights ahead of other competitors. This acquisition has turned out to be Mubi’s most significant one yet; the question is, what makes “Die, My Love” so captivating?

What’s the movie about?

In the movie, written by Ramsay, Enda Walsh, and Alice Birch, Lawrence portrays Grace, a woman who experiences a mental breakdown following her move from bustling New York City to rural Montana with her husband Jackson. Contrary to popular belief, this film isn’t focused on postpartum depression, according to Ramsay. Instead, she explains to Deadline: “The whole postpartum aspect is merely a façade. It’s not about that. It’s about the deterioration of a relationship, the disintegration of love and intimacy after having a baby. And it’s also about creative block.

Who’s a part of Jennifer Lawrence’s breakdown?

In the film “Die, My Love,” Lawrence takes on the role of Grace, while Robert Pattinson portrays her husband Jackson. Sissy Spacek joins the cast as Pam, Jackson’s mother. Other notable actors include LaKeith Stanfield, who plays a character named Karl on a motorcycle, Nick Nolte as Harry, Gabrielle Rose as Jen, Debs Howard as Marsha, Sarah Lind as Cheryl, and Marcus Della Rosa as The Lifeguard.

What has Jennifer Lawrence said about Die, My Love?

Lawrence found herself deeply identified with her character Grace during filming, as she had just given birth to her first child at that time. “As a mother,” she said at a press conference in Cannes earlier this year, “it was quite challenging to determine my own actions from those of my character. It was heartrending… I had recently welcomed my newborn into the world, and there’s nothing quite like postpartum feelings. They can be incredibly isolating. Grace doesn’t have a support system; she lacks her community and loved ones. However, it’s important to note that severe anxiety and depression can cause feelings of isolation, regardless of one’s circumstances. It makes you feel like an outsider.

According to Lawrence, it was the pre-production work they did under director Ramsay that helped them bond swiftly with Pattinson. As she put it in an interview with Brut, “Ramsay made us take dance lessons before filming began, which was incredibly humiliating and embarrassing.” When they started shooting on their first day, they were both naked, mimicking the aggression of tigers, as Lawrence described it.

When does the movie come out?

Die, My Love has a due date of November 7, 2025, only in theaters.
