Jennifer Lawrence Gets Honest About Motherhood and Postpartum at Cannes: ‘It’s Extremely Isolating’ and ‘You Feel Like an Alien’

At a recent press conference for her upcoming movie “Die My Love” (a thrilling tale of a woman’s descent into madness as a new mother), Jennifer Lawrence candidly discussed her own journey with motherhood and postpartum experiences.

During the filming of the movie, Lawrence found it challenging to distinguish between her own actions and those of her character, and it was deeply upsetting for her,” she explained. “At the time, I had recently given birth to my first child, and there’s nothing quite like postpartum. It’s incredibly lonely, which is ironic. When Lynne relocates this couple to Montana, she lacks a support network. She doesn’t have her tribe. However, what the movie portrays – extreme anxiety and depression – can make you feel isolated no matter where you are. You might as well be an alien.

Last night saw the debut of the movie titled “Die My Love,” which features Robert Pattinson portraying Lawrence’s troubled husband. This film garnered a six-minute standing ovation. The storyline is adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel, sharing the same name, where a new mother descends into psychosis following postpartum depression. Consequently, the couple’s relationship faces turmoil as they grapple with the wife’s mental health issues. In addition to Pattinson, Ramsay’s supporting cast includes notable names like LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek, and Nick Nolte. As of now, an American distributor for this film is still to be confirmed, but it’s expected to generate significant sales following its showing at Cannes.

He wrote: “You can sense the strength of her presence, the determined nature of her anger. Whether she’s berating a chatty cashier, acting like an animal, wrecking the bathroom, or spilling cleaning products across the floor and smashing her head against a mirror, she excels at portraying a reckless, destructive character. However, the sheer power of her destruction leaves us wondering: What is going on?
