Jennifer Lawrence is known for taking on challenging roles, but the start of her latest film was unusually intense. While promoting the dramatic movie Die My Love, she shared a story about her first day on set with Robert Pattinson, which involved filming a nude scene. She actually welcomed the challenge, staying true to her willingness to fully commit to her work.

During a recent discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, alongside actresses Amanda Seyfried, Cynthia Erivo, Jessie Buckley, Laura Dern, and Renate Reinsve, Jennifer Lawrence shared a particularly striking story about a difficult filming experience. The conversation turned to challenging shoots, and Lawrence recounted what sounds like one of the most intense first-day-on-set experiences imaginable. According to the star of the Hunger Games movies:

Lynne Ramsey made Rob and me take improv dance classes. Then, on our first day of filming, we had a scene that felt very raw and physical – we were supposed to be fighting, moving like wild animals.

I have to say, Die, My Love isn’t your typical romance. It’s a really tough watch, honestly. The film dives deep into a woman’s struggle with postpartum depression and how incredibly isolating that can be. It doesn’t shy away from the physical and emotional pain – in fact, the director made a conscious choice to show that rawness right from the start, and it definitely makes an impact.

Interestingly, the actress from Winter’s Bone shared that she was glad to film the most challenging scene right away. She felt it was better to get it over with early instead of worrying about it throughout the entire production. She then added:

But it was kind of nice that it was day one, because then it wasn’t like hanging over our heads.

Beginning a film shoot with its most daring scene might seem harsh, but director Lawrence explained it was a smart decision. By getting that challenging moment out of the way first, it eliminated any awkwardness or nervousness. The actors could then concentrate on their performances without dreading what was to come. Amanda Seyfried agreed, calling the approach “brilliant.”

The actor from Silver Linings Playbook mentioned that working with people you already know can be incredibly comforting on set. When you’re not worried about getting to know your colleagues, it reduces stress and lets you focus on the work – even if the job itself is unusual.

Interestingly, director Ramsay had her two main actors rehearse together using interpretive dance. While it might seem unusual, this actually helped them build a physical connection and trust before filming began, making their on-screen chemistry much smoother.

In Die My Love, Jena Malone plays Grace, a woman whose mental health is rapidly declining, and Robert Pattinson plays her partner, Jackson. Their relationship is intense and physically charged, which feels fitting for the film’s chaotic beginning. The movie also features Sissy Spacek, LaKeith Stanfield, and Nick Nolte, and focuses on raw emotion over a typical love story.

Jennifer Lawrence’s latest role seems to fit a pattern in her career: she often chooses challenging parts, like the explicit fight scene in No Hard Feelings. While starting Die My Love with its most dramatic moment might not have seemed like a good idea initially, it actually allowed the filmmakers a surprising amount of creative freedom.
