As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about Jenna Ortega’s recent psychological thriller. Interestingly, it seems this movie has already set its sights on a digital release, barely a month after its theatrical premiere. This tidbit of information comes to light following the film’s less-than-stellar performance at the box office and heavy criticism from viewers.
According to current reports, it’s anticipated that “Hurry Up Tomorrow” will be released for streaming and digital viewing on June 6, 2025. However, this date is yet to be officially confirmed and may change. The movie had its theatrical premiere on May 16, but was criticized as a self-indulgent project by its writer, producer, and star, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. This film shares its title with The Weeknd’s album, and features him in a fictional role that mirrors himself. In the movie, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” The Weeknd portrays a character dealing with depression and insomnia while encountering a figure played by Ortega.
In the movie, Jenna added significant depth to her character. There was a moment where director/co-writer Trey Shults and I exchanged glances, thinking, “This part seems unbelievable on paper how will it work on screen?” However, she proposed an idea. She took charge of that entire scene; none of it had been rehearsed, and many of my reactions during it were genuine rather than acted.
Yesterday saw the release of “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” facing tough competition from “Final Destination Bloodlines.” Despite this, it failed to impress at the box office and has only managed to gross $6 million so far, with production costs amounting to $15 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently boasts a dismal 15% approval rating, summarized by critics as: “After all, maybe we should skip straight to Monday.
Viewers find Hurry Up Tomorrow to be positively received, as its Popcornmeter rating is classified as “fresh” at 64% approval. Often criticized as an extended music video or a self-indulgent project, it predominantly appeals to The Weeknd’s fanbase. The screenplay for the film was co-written by Tesfaye along with Shults (It Comes At Night) and Reza Fahim. Not only did Tesfaye write the script, but he also produced the movie and contributed to its soundtrack.
Jenna Ortega’s Other Roles Have Proven More Successful
Tomorrow’s Hurry Up film isn’t Ortega’s greatest box office success. The Wednesday actress has previously shone in other movies and shows that have struck a chord with a broader public. In 2024, she became part of the cast for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as Astrid Deetz. This highly anticipated Tim Burton sequel, where she starred, was warmly received by audiences.
In 2025, it’s planned that Netflix will release a second season of the show “Wednesday”. Additionally, Ortega will be taking on the role of executive producer for this season. Besides this, she has several other projects coming up: a thriller film by Cathy Yan named “The Gallerist” and a dystopian sci-fi movie with Taika Waititi called “Klara and the Sun”. Furthermore, Ortega is expected to act alongside Glen Powell and Samuel L. Jackson in an upcoming, as yet untitled project.
Hurry Up Tomorrow is reported to be available digitally on June 6, 2025.
