As a fervent admirer of Jenna Ortega, I find her insightful and thought-provoking perspectives on Hollywood and politics truly commendable. Her experiences, particularly with the “Scream” franchise, have undeniably shaped her wisdom and maturity beyond her years.
Jenna Ortega recently discussed with Vanity Fair the blend of Hollywood and politics, focusing on how the expectation for actors to be politically correct can lead to a compromise in personal integrity. Last year, following the dismissal of Melissa Barrera from the “Scream” series over social media posts regarding Israel and Palestine, Ortega herself chose to step away from the franchise, attributing her exit to scheduling issues as an explanation.
“Ortega remarked to Vanity Fair about Hollywood that the industry is excessively sensitive and focused on political correctness. In his opinion, this emphasis on being politically correct often strips us of our humanity and authenticity, as it lacks honesty.”
“She went on to express her hope for more open dialogue, stating, ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone felt free to share their thoughts without fear of judgment? Ideally, such discussions would lead to stimulating debates rather than heated arguments.'”
“Am I describing world peace?” she then asked herself on a lighter note.
Barria was let go from “Scream 7” production because of her social media posts advocating for Palestine during the ongoing Israel conflict. Spyglass Media Group, the show’s producer, made a statement to EbMaster at the time: “Spyglass firmly stands against antisemitism and inciting hate in any way, including misrepresentations of genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust, or anything that blatantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
In my social media feed, I chose to propagate a post alleging actions of genocide and ethnic cleansing by Israel. Additionally, I re-shared an article from Jewish Currents that discussed the manipulation of the Holocaust for the purpose of bolstering the Israeli arms industry.
Following Barrera and Ortega’s departure, “Scream 7” underwent significant changes and reintroduced original franchise star Neve Campbell as the main character. Meanwhile, Ortega’s work within the franchise will carry on with the upcoming “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which marks Tim Burton’s long-anticipated sequel to “Beetlejuice.” This new film is set to hit theaters on September 6 from Warner Bros., after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Head over to Vanity Fair’s website to read Ortega’s cover story in its entirety.
