Jenna Ortega Says Cameron Boyce Stopped an Audition Where They Were Supposed to Kiss as Teens and Felt ‘Uncomfortable’: ‘No, We Can’t Do This’

As a fan who has been following the careers of these talented individuals, I cannot help but be moved by the stories of camaraderie and empathy that have emerged from the entertainment industry. The tale of Jenna Ortega and Cameron Boyce‘s friendship is a testament to their mutual respect and concern for each other, even during trying times.

During an interview with her “Beetlejuice” co-stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara (via People, as reported by Canal+), Jenna Ortega shared that Cameron Boyce, the late actor, had given her support during a challenging audition. In this audition, she was required to kiss Boyce, who was not only a friend but also a fellow teen at the time. Sadly, Boyce passed away in 2019 at the age of 20 following a seizure while asleep.

The last time I interacted with my friend Cameron Boyce – we’ve been acquainted since I was around 11 or 12 years old, and there was a time when we were supposed to act as love interests in a production. This happened a few years later, when we were about 15 or 16. Upon arriving, we were both aware that the scene required us to kiss, but because he felt uncomfortable due to our age difference, he expressed his reservations – leading us to mutually decide that it wasn’t appropriate.

Ortega mentioned that he was extremely considerate towards her discomfort, as she found the situation challenging. She expressed her deep appreciation and gratitude for Boyce’s actions during the audition, where he prioritized comfort over securing the role. Afterwards, they both wished each other good luck.

Previously this year, People was informed by Boyce’s parents that it is extremely significant to them when friends and past coworkers share memories about the deceased actor, as they feel these stories keep his memory alive and people still cherish him, not wanting him to fade away.

More contemporary actors, including Ortega, have openly discussed the awkward audition experiences they faced during their early acting careers. For example, Anne Hathaway shared with V Magazine this past spring that audition processes like chemistry tests have significantly improved since her time auditioning in the 2000s.

In the 2000s, it was common practice to request an actor to kiss other actors during auditions, as a means of testing chemistry, which is quite ineffective according to Hathaway. She recalled being told, “We have ten men coming today and you’ve got the part. Aren’t you thrilled about kissing them all?” Her reaction was one of confusion because she found the idea distasteful, as she thought it sounded unpleasant.

When I was quite young, I realized how quickly things could slip away if I was seen as ‘difficult.’ So, I feigned enthusiasm and moved forward instead,” Hathaway explained. “It wasn’t about exerting power or intentionally being unpleasant or hurting me. It was simply a different era, and now we understand better.
