Jenna Ortega Quit Twitter After Seeing Explicit AI Photos of Herself as a Teen: It’s ‘Dirty Edited Content’ and ‘It’s Terrifying. It’s Corrupt. It’s Wrong’

As a seasoned movie critic who’s seen more than my fair share of Hollywood’s highs and lows, I must say that Jenna Ortega‘s journey is both inspiring and disheartening in equal measure. Her experiences with AI and online harassment are a stark reminder of the darker side of our digital age, one that far too many young artists have to navigate.

In a conversation with The New York Times, Jenna Ortega shared that she decided to leave Twitter following instances where artificial intelligence created and circulated explicit images of her during her teenage years. Additionally, she was overwhelmed by an influx of messages from fans that were not only inappropriate but also bizarre.

Ortega expressed his dislike for AI, stating, “AI has immense potential, but it’s also been used in ways that are downright disturbing. For instance, I came across an article mentioning that AI can detect breast cancer four years before it becomes advanced. That’s truly remarkable. However, my personal experiences with AI have been far from positive. I recall being forced to create a Twitter account at 14 only to be confronted with inappropriate content that had been manipulated from my childhood images. It’s horrifying, it’s unethical, and it’s simply wrong.”

Ortega recalled that she was 12-years-old when she received her initial private message from a social media follower. The content of the message wasn’t something she had asked for – it was an image of a man’s private parts, and this unfortunate incident marked only the start of similar experiences.

“Ortega previously maintained a Twitter account, but was advised, ‘You need to do it, you need to establish your identity.’ In the end, he removed it approximately two to three years back due to an overwhelming flood of strange photos and images following the release of his show. At that point, Ortega was already in a perplexed state and decided to delete it.”

Ortega expressed that the content was unpleasant and left him with an unpleasant feeling. He found it uncomfortable as well. Thus, he decided to delete it because he couldn’t respond without being confronted by such disturbing images. One day, he simply woke up and realized he no longer needed it, so he chose to let go of it.

Lately, Alejandra Ortega has been appearing on various media outlets, promoting her role in Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival before hitting cinemas nationwide on September 6, distributed by Warner Bros. As a child actor at just 9 years old, she had her initial foray into acting, which unfortunately exposed her to cyberbullying at an early age.

“She admitted that there were moments of remorse about beginning her acting career at a young age; both she and her parents have had their regrets. However, looking back, she wouldn’t alter anything. She doesn’t subscribe to the idea of regret because instead, she is profoundly thankful for the lessons it provided her. Now, when she steps onto a film set, she feels incredibly well-informed. She understands technical terms like camera verbiage and knows about various roles such as grip, gaffer, DP, and more. She can navigate through shot lists and feel at ease on set because this environment is familiar to her.”
