Jenna Ortega Believes She Read for ‘Dune’ in ‘Very Secret’ Audition: ‘I Think It Was Zendaya’s’ Role

As a devoted follower of Jenna Ortega‘s career journey, I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration and empathy for her experiences in Hollywood. Her story is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the unwavering passion that drives young artists to chase their dreams.

Jenna Ortega believes she tried out for Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” remake about six years back. In a recent conversation with Buzzfeed, the actress mentioned her eagerness to connect with the director during the film’s early stages of production.

“When questioned about an unexpected role he had tried out for, the 21-year-old actor replied, ‘I believe I auditioned for ‘Dune’ around the age of 15.’ I was a huge fan of that movie and its series, and I was genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to interview with Denis [Villeneuve], who is among my favorite directors.”

Ortega mentioned that she thought she auditioned for the character of Chani, portrayed by Zendaya in both “Dune” movies: “I believe it was Chani’s role. I think it was Zendaya’s part, but they weren’t confirming it. Everything was kept under wraps.”

In early 2019, it was rumored that Zendaya had been chosen for the movie “Dune.” This suggests that director Denis Villeneuve might have been interviewing actors like Ortega in the months leading up to this announcement. It’s important to note that Zendaya is six years older than Ortega, being 27 years old herself. On the other hand, Timothée Chalamet, who portrays the lead character Paul Atreides and falls for Chani in the film, is just a year older at 28.

For Ortega, the “Dune” audition wasn’t her debut performance; she’s been part of the acting world since her childhood. In a recent interview with The New York Times, she admitted that there have been moments when she regretted starting her career so young, but ultimately, she wouldn’t change anything about her journey.

“Ortega mentioned that his mother had noticed other children weren’t adequately cared for during his work on productions as a child. He explained that she watched over him closely, suggesting her concern wasn’t just protection but also empathy and a wish to help. She would frequently call to express her gratitude that he was safe and to share in the experience of everything that happened.”

At present, Ortega is doing interviews to publicize her latest project, titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” This sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy finds Ortega portraying Astrid, the child of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder). In this new installment, Ortega and Burton reunite, having collaborated before on Netflix’s popular show “Wednesday.”

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” rises to theaters Sept. 6.
