It appears that Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, has developed a strong connection with the actual “Lucille” bat prop used in the show.
It’s not hard to guess that Morgan was overjoyed to receive a revamped version of Lucille, which had a built-in electric shock mechanism this time around. Negan handed it to the Croat and promptly used it to electrify someone. Through it all, Morgan couldn’t hide his excitement at getting Lucille back in his possession once more.
Scott M. Gimple, the executive producer, mentioned that “Jeffrey seems to have a strong attachment to Lucille.” He added that “Jeffrey rarely separates himself from Lucille, even when he goes to his trailer. In fact, he often brings Lucille with him to his trailer. When Lucille is not in use, he simply places it on a seat. Unlike other props, Lucille isn’t returned to the props department until the end of the day.
Gimple hinted that the return of Lucille could signify a possible reemergence of Negan as we knew him from the show. Over the last few years, Negan transformed into such a different person, and this character shift made the iconic figure seem almost lost.
In Dead City, it’s clear that Morgan shared some insights about Negan not being overjoyed at the prospect of Lucille 2.0. He revealed a scene from the Season 2 premiere that didn’t make the final cut, which depicted Negan’s inner turmoil as he grappled with his past self while reacquainting with the person he once was.
Morgan expressed his confusion over why a certain incident occurred, but he tossed the bat far into the cell since he’s spent years distancing himself from Negan, a man notorious for violence. The bat, along with Negan’s signature leather coat, stirs memories of that ruthless Negan. He strives to transform or escape that aspect of his character developed during the apocalypse. Presently, these individuals are coercing him into embracing that violent persona once more, and he resists. At the end of the first season, he was attempting to change and leave behind that phase of his life. Now, he’s being compelled to revert back to the person he doesn’t wish to be, which is an intriguing challenge for him to portray in his role.
He commented, “No, I believe he isn’t fond of Lucille 2.0. His affinity for the original bat, though, was deeply rooted in his past with his ex-wife Lucille. The current bat wasn’t crafted by him and was a gift from Ivanek, not unlike Lucille 2.0. However, he doesn’t seem to address her as Lucille. There comes a time when he must utilize her, I suppose, but it isn’t the same connection as before.”
Morgan Really, Really Loves Lucille
Morgan himself discussed his affection for Lucille in a recent interview. “I knew she’d return a year before we began filming, and I was eager,” he stated. “I’m not just a prop actor; some actors embody their characters through props, and Lucille was the first such prop I had until I met her. Now, I fully comprehend it. Having her back in my possession meant more to me than it did to Jeff, and perhaps even more than it did to Negan.
He continued by saying, “Negan appears a bit unsettled with Lucille back in his presence. On the other hand, Jeff was overjoyed. I found it delightful. I ensure the prop team doesn’t take her away from me. She accompanies me to my trailer and even to craft services. I keep her close by throughout the day and don’t let others play with her.
He too pondered on the implications of the baseball bat’s return for Negan. Essentially, there’s a lot of internal conflict in Negan, and Lucille significantly contributes to this turmoil. I believe that she symbolizes so much for him, but when he burnt her in [season 10 episode] ‘Here’s Negan,’ it was an attempt to discard a piece of his past. However, what he burned may well re-emerge in his life again.
