As someone who grew up watching the YouTube revolution unfold, I can’t help but feel a sense of disillusionment when it comes to the downfall of once-beloved creators like David Dobrik. I remember his vlogs filled with laughter, camaraderie, and excitement, and it’s heartbreaking to see him embroiled in such controversy.
As a devoted follower, I’d like to share that Jeff Wittek, once part of the YouTube collective known as the ‘Vlog Squad’, has publicly criticized Casey Neistat for seemingly shielding David Dobrik, an individual Jeff has had ongoing issues with for years, by not releasing his documentary about David.
Back in the 2010s, I was completely hooked on YouTube, and no one stood out more than David Dobrik. His vibrant, short-form vlogs were an exhilarating blend of the wild, LA nightlife experiences you’d typically associate with young adults – a refreshing change from the family-friendly content that had been the norm since ‘Adpocalypse’.
2021 saw a collapse, spanning over several months, for Dobrik and his Vlog Squad group, due to a string of accusations and worries that surfaced.
In simpler terms, the most significant issue involved accusations of rape against a member of the Squad, specifically Dominykas Zeglaitas (or ‘Durte Dom’). Footage related to this incident was incorporated into one of Dobrik’s videos as comedic material.
After that unfortunate event, Dobrik has faced persistent challenges, particularly from his former collaborator Jeff Wittek, who was hurt during an excavator stunt that went terribly awry.
Over the course of these events, it came to light that Casey Neistat had been creating a documentary chronicling Dobrik’s life on YouTube, capturing both triumphs and tribulations along the way.
For a few years now, the documentary, initially showcased at SXSW, remains unreleased to the public. Casey Neistat, its creator, has expressed that he continues to feel guardian-like towards David, possibly explaining why it’s yet to be shared publicly.

Jeff replied to this with a video called “Casey Neistat, I’m Disappointed,” where he expressed gratitude for Casey sharing the documentary and providing him with a solid motivation to eventually address Dobrik. He then restated his disappointment towards Neistat over his confession of wanting to shield David by keeping the documentary hidden.
Jeff conveyed: “He admitted that he won’t be sharing his documentary, which features an interview with a woman who was assaulted, discussing her most distressing experience, and he’s choosing to conceal the story to shield a young person. He openly acknowledged this.
She had no desire for popularity or fame; instead, she yearned merely to share her personal experiences with the aim of apprehending a notorious wrongdoer.

In current times, Wittek expressed his thoughts about the Vlog Squad, suggesting they are holding out hope for Dobrik’s career comeback in order to regain their popularity, yet he feels that such a resurgence might not materialize.
David hasn’t been active on YouTube for quite some time, but you can find him frequently posting content on Snapchat instead. Additionally, he’s involved in running his own pizza restaurant called Doughbrik’s.
It’s uncertain if he will reappear in the spotlight, but Wittek seems to believe it won’t happen, and it appears he has no desire for it either.
