Jeff Goldblum Bets Against ‘Jurassic World’ Return: ‘Dr. Ian Malcolm May Have Ridden Off Into the Sunset’

As a movie critic with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must admit that the news of Jeff Goldblum‘s potential departure from the Jurassic Park franchise leaves me feeling like a Velociraptor that’s just lost its favorite steak snack.

As a huge fan of dinosaur flicks, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia knowing that my beloved character, Dr. Ian Malcolm from the iconic “Jurassic Park,” might not be returning to the silver screen. In a heartfelt chat with Total Film for their final issue, Jeff Goldblum himself hinted that this might be the end of the road for Malcolm, as the franchise is gearing up for a fresh start with the upcoming release of “Jurassic World Rebirth” next summer. Starring the talented trio of Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, I can’t wait to see what new adventures await in this thrilling prehistoric world!

Goldblum mused, “It seems Ian Malcolm might have gone on his way, possibly. However, in his stead, I’m excited to see Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey from ‘Wicked,’ step into the limelight. I believe this change is a smart move.

Jeff Goldblum played a significant role in the “Jurassic” series, appearing in four out of six movies. He starred alongside Sam Neill and Laura Dern in the 1993 original directed by Steven Spielberg. Goldblum then took the lead in the 1997 sequel, “The Lost World.” Over two decades later, he reprised his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” where he testified before a panel about the dangers of bringing back and managing massive prehistoric creatures for amusement parks. Goldblum later teamed up with Neill and Dern once more in “Jurassic World Dominion” in 2022, marking the end of the “Jurassic World” trilogy starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. This film earned over $1 billion worldwide, but received harsh criticism from critics.

Goldblum shared with Total Film that his reunion with Dern and Neill was enjoyable, stating, “I took great care in ensuring our endeavor there turned out well, and lived up to our commitment.” He further described the experience as “a delight” and admitted, “I put a lot of effort into making it successful and worthwhile. I believe it drew a large crowd. However, opinions about it vary. It’s challenging to create a good movie.

Three years after the so-called concluding film in the franchise, Universal is bringing the Jurassic World series back to life with “Jurassic World Rebirth,” scheduled for release on July 2, 2025. In addition to Scarlett Johansson, Daniella Pineda, and Justice Smith, the cast includes Rupert Friend, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, Ed Skrein, Manuel Garcia-Rulf, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda. Gareth Edwards is directing a screenplay penned by David Koepp.
