Since leaving his leadership role at Amazon in the summer of 2021, Jeff Bezos has been working on various new ventures. His latest project, called Prometheus, seems to be focused on building an AI model, primarily intended for use by engineers. Reports suggest Bezos’ startup has successfully hired talent from rival companies and secured significant funding.
Jeff Bezos as the Prometheus of AI
According to The New York Times, a new company has emerged, shrouded in some mystery. While its exact origins are unknown, it currently employs around 100 people, many of whom previously worked at leading AI companies like OpenAI, Meta, and DeepMind. Jeff Bezos is leading the company alongside co-founder and co-CEO Vik Bajaj, who previously worked at Google.
With over 6 billion dollars already invested, this project is set to be a major undertaking. According to The Indian Express, the company will offer support to sectors like aviation and automotive, focusing on engineering and traditional industries. Essentially, Jeff Bezos is shifting his focus towards backing physical industries instead of digital ones.
Currently, it’s unclear what Jeff Bezos plans to accomplish with this new venture. It’s a significant departure from the types of businesses he developed while leading Amazon.
Like many companies involved in artificial intelligence, Project Prometheus is contributing to the current AI hype. This is starting to cause problems, recently seen in the sharp increase in the price of DDR5 computer memory. Building or upgrading a computer has become significantly more expensive in the last month. Reports suggest NVIDIA is also being affected, and may have to cancel plans for its RTX 50 Super graphics card.
