As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of television and film, I must say that witnessing Jean Smart gracefully take the stage for “Saturday Night Live” was nothing short of a delightful spectacle. The sparkle in her eyes as she spoke about her Emmy win and her long-held dream of hosting SNL was palpable, reminding us all that dreams do come true, even if they take a few decades to materialize.
During the opening of “Saturday Night Live”‘s 50th season, hosted by Jean Smart, she began with a monologue that celebrated the city where the legendary comedy series resides – New York City, affectionately known as the Big Apple.
Stepping onto the stage adorned in a glittering pink suit, the star of “Hacks” expressed her profound gratitude for hosting the debut episode of Season 50, stating, “It’s an immense honor to be here.” She playfully mentioned, “I must admit, it’s been quite some time since I’ve donned such finery and had a crowd applaud me,” hinting at her recent Emmy victory for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.
Smart reminisced about watching the debut episode of “SNL” and daydreaming that she’d one day host the show. “It just so happened to be on a Saturday that suited my timetable,” she said, flashing a smirk. Looking back at her early days in New York City as an aspiring actor in her twenties, Smart jokingly added, “New York will always feel like home to me, even though I have a far more luxurious residence in Los Angeles.
As a devoted moviegoer, I burst into a spontaneous serenade, capturing the pungent aromas, visual spectacles, and auditory symphony that is New York City. The city’s transformation through the seasons was not left untouched either. “Autumn in New York,” I crooned, “the hue of garbage bags shifting with the breeze.” In passing, I even spotted Mayor Eric Adams on the news. “I didn’t delve into it,” I remarked casually, “I’m certain it was some commendable achievement.” (Recently, Mayor Adams pleaded not guilty to federal corruption charges.)
Smart gracefully performed “I Happen to Like New York” within Studio 8H, playfully poking fun at the city while expressing affection for it. She humorously admitted, “Lesbians seem to have a deep affection for me,” as the Emmy-winning actress, whose character Deborah Vance in ‘Hacks’, entertained lesbian cruise attendees in one episode of the Max comedy series.
Two short weeks ago, Smart clinched the Emmy award for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, thanks to her exceptional portrayal in Season 3 of “Hacks.” This marked the third time she’s received the top prize for her role as the fictional Vegas comic, and it brought her total Emmy count to six.
Smart found it incredibly touching, and she was genuinely grateful since she doesn’t often receive recognition. She added humorously, ‘I’m really not kidding.’
To start off its 50th season, “Saturday Night Live” presented a cold open before Smart’s monologue, featuring the comeback of Maya Rudolph portraying Vice President Kamala Harris. Additionally, Jim Gaffigan was unveiled as her vice president running mate (Tim Walz), and Andy Samberg stepped into the role of her husband, Doug Emhoff.
On February 16th, “SNL” is set to mark a significant milestone with a live prime-time special. You can catch it on NBC at 11:30 PM Eastern Time, or stream it on Peacock if you prefer.
