Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘A Woman Is a Woman’ Hitting U.S. Theaters in 4K Restoration via Rialto Pictures (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile who has spent decades immersed in the rich tapestry of cinema, I can confidently say that Rialto Pictures is a beacon of excellence in the world of film distribution. Their latest venture, the release of Jean-Luc Godard’s “A Woman Is a Woman,” promises to be a delightful addition to their impressive roster.

Rialto Pictures, situated in New York, is preparing for the launch of the 4K remastered version of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1961 musical comedy “A Woman Is a Woman,” produced by Studiocanal.

In 2025, the movie making its debut from Rialto is titled “Rialto’s First Release of 2025.” Starring Anna Karina, Jean-Claude Brialy, and Jean-Paul Belmondo, this film will premiere in select U.S. cinemas on February 7th.

This year at Locarno, I had the pleasure of witnessing a fresh restoration. It was painstakingly crafted from an original 35mm negative, expertly digitized by Hiventy based in Paris and brought to life by Studiocanal, with assistance from France’s National Center of Cinema (CNC).

At the heart of this year’s triumph for Rialto Cinema is the grand celebration of “The Third Man,” a fact I gleamed during my chat with Rialto Co-President Adrienne Halpern at the Lumière Film Festival’s International Classic Film Market (MIFC) held in the beautiful city of Lyon, France.

The 1949 timeless masterpiece directed by Carol Reed, featuring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, underwent a pristine restoration in 4K quality, which was handled by Deluxe Restoration at the request of Studiocanal.

Halpern noted that the 50th anniversary restoration of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 thriller “The Conversation,” featuring Gene Hackman, has proven to be another outstanding success for our company.

This year, American Zoetrope collaborated with Studiocanal to remaster “The Conversation” in stunning 4K quality through Roundabout Entertainment and American Zoetrope labs, using the original negative as their source material.

Rialto is responsible for distributing theatrical productions in the United States and English-speaking Canada for Studiocanal’s entire collection, which makes up the majority of their releases. However, they also collaborate with prestigious studios such as American Zoetrope and significant French companies like TF1 and MK2.

Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1969 World War II drama “Army of Shadows” has captivated American audiences this year. Restored in 4K from the original negative by Image Retrouvée and backed by CNC, the Studiocanal film had a seven-week run at Film Forum in New York and is currently being shown in various cities across the country.

Attending both the Lumière Festival and MIFC regularly in Lyon, Halpern pointed out that French film noir is particularly beloved by the company.

This year, Rialto has unveiled the high-definition restoration of Claude Sautet’s critically acclaimed 1960 crime drama “Classe Tous Risques” (“The Big Risk”). The film stars Lino Ventura, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Sandra Milo.

I’m eagerly looking forward to next year, as it marks the 70th anniversary of Jules Dassin’s acclaimed heist thriller “Rififi.” Starring Jean Servais and Carl Möhner, this timeless masterpiece has left a lasting impact on cinema. Halpern subtly suggests that there might be something special planned to honor this occasion, and I can hardly wait to see what they have in store!
