The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has left fans with a lot of questions. We don’t know who the main villain is, and Peter Parker is battling a strange illness that might lead him to fight with six arms instead of two. But right now, there’s something even more interesting to talk about: the character Sadie Sink will be playing.
Although the movie Brand New Day comes out July 31st, Marvel Studios isn’t showing actress Sink’s face. They’re deliberately keeping her character a secret, only revealing her briefly from behind and wearing a hood. However, fans online are already carefully examining every bit of footage to try and figure out who she’s playing.
The character played by Emma Corrin in the Brand New Day trailer is wearing yellow and green – the same colors associated with Jean Grey for years. Adding to the speculation, the movie also features a powerful telepath who can control people’s minds. Now, fans aren’t wondering if Corrin is playing Jean Grey, but rather what role she’ll have when she joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Luckily, there’s plenty of existing comic book material to help predict what happens next.
This Marvel Comics Storyline Explains Jean Grey’s Role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Similar to the X-Men, Spider-Man often faces public distrust. Many people, notably J. Jonah Jameson from the Daily Bugle, see him as a danger and believe he complicates the police’s job of protecting New York City. It’s not surprising, then, that Spider-Man and the X-Men occasionally team up. Currently, one collaboration is particularly noteworthy, as it heavily features both Spider-Man and Jean Grey.
In Spectacular Spider-Man #197, the villain Professor Power started a conflict with the X-Men by kidnapping most of the team, leaving only Jean Grey behind. Spider-Man happened to see the kidnapping because he and the X-Men had just finished stopping a bank robbery together, and he immediately intervened. In the following issue, while sneaking into Professor Power’s hideout, Spider-Man found Jean, who was using her telepathic powers to quietly move past the guards.
Working together, Jean and Spider-Man stopped Power’s scheme and ensured the X-Men were safe. As they parted ways, Jean kissed Spider-Man on the cheek, a gesture that showed how close they had become during their adventure.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Jean Grey might not be welcoming to Peter Parker, as she sees him as just another masked hero she doesn’t know. Still, it’s possible they share a common goal without realizing it.
The Department of Damage Control is known for capturing people with special abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with its upcoming return in Brand New Day, it’s likely they’ll be targeting mutants as well. If they’ve already captured some of Jean Grey’s friends, she’ll probably do whatever it takes to rescue them.
Spider-Man might disagree with her approach, but he cares just as much about protecting innocent mutants as Jean does. They’ll need to find some understanding and work together if they hope to succeed and create a bond as powerful as the one fans have seen in the comics.
