It’s been confirmed through a social media post by his lifelong friend Laurie Jacobson that Jay North, famously known for his role as Dennis Mitchell in the 1959 “Dennis the Menace” television series, passed away at the age of 73, following a struggle with cancer.
Our cherished friend, JAY NORTH, has been battling cancer for quite some time. This midday today, Jay took his final peaceful breath at home, as shared by Jacobson in a message. Many of his admirers are aware that he faced numerous challenges in Hollywood and beyond, but he refused to let these hardships dictate the course of his life. His heart was as vast as a mountain, and he cherished his friendships deeply. He would frequently reach out to us, always signing off with ‘I love you with all my heart.’ We reciprocated that love wholeheartedly. Jay was not only a lifelong companion to Jon, but also a sibling to Jeanne and a dear friend to me. His absence will be felt profoundly. He is now free from pain and his struggle has come to an end. At last, he finds peace.
The television show ‘Dennis the Menace,’ inspired by Hank Ketcham’s comic strip, spanned 4 seasons with a total of 146 episodes. The story revolved around Dennis Mitchell, a young boy known as ‘the menace,’ who frequently caused trouble for his elderly neighbor Mr. George Wilson (played by Joseph Kearns), through various pranks. Alongside Dennis, the cast included Herbert Anderson, Gloria Henry, Billy Booth, Sylvia Field, and Gale Gordon.
Following the conclusion of the series back in 1963, I found myself stepping into various guest roles on television shows such as “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”, “The Lucy Show”, “My Three Sons”, and “Jericho”. I even lent my voice to series like “Arabian Knights”, “Here Comes the Grumps”, “The Banana Splits Adventure Hour”, and “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show.” My final leading role was in the 1974 suspenseful drama, “The Teacher”.
Born on August 3, 1951, North hailed from the bustling world of Hollywood and developed a love for television at an early age. His career began with appearances in commercials and minor roles on shows like “The Eddie Fisher Show” and “The Milton Berle Show.” By the tender age of six, he had already secured the lead role in “Dennis the Menace.
