As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news of Javier Bardem starring in Apple TV+’s “Cape Fear” series has me absolutely thrilled! The man is a chameleon on screen, and his ability to embody complex characters is truly unparalleled.

Apple TV+ has commissioned a television series based on the “Cape Fear” story, with Javier Bardem slated for a major part in it.

In my perspective,

Back in 2023, I first caught wind of a series being in the works, but at that point, there was neither a platform nor a cast attached to it. Fast forward to now, Apple has commissioned a full season of 10 episodes for this project. As was announced back then, Nick Antosca will be taking on the roles of writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The legendary duo, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, have also signed up as executive producers. It’s an exciting time to be a fan!

The show is modeled after the novel “The Executioners” by John D. MacDonald, which served as the foundation for Gregory Peck’s 1962 Universal Pictures film “Cape Fear,” as well as the highly praised 1991 remake directed by Scorsese and produced by Spielberg, featuring Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte in prominent roles.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I, Antosca, am executive producing this project under my Eat the Cat production house, joined by Alex Hedlund. The talented Bardem will not only star but also executive produce. Spielberg, along with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, will do the same for Amblin Television. Universal Content Productions (UCP) will produce, given that I’m currently under an overall deal at their studio. You might remember that Amblin has previously collaborated with Apple on series like “Masters of the Air” and “Amazing Stories.” Scorsese’s film “Killers of the Flower Moon” was also released by Apple in 2023.

This marks the latest Apple project for Bardem, who is also set to star in the film “F1” for the media arm of the tech giant. That film will premiere in June 2025. Bardem is known for his roles in films like “No Country for Old Men,” for which he won the Academy Award for best supporting actor. He has also been nominated for his work in films like “Before Night Falls,” “Biutiful,” and “Becoming the Ricardos.” He recently starred in the two “Dune” films and played a lead role in Season 2 of “Monsters” at Netflix.

He is repped by WME, ID PR, and Goodman Genow.

Lately, Antosca’s work in the true crime genre has been receiving high praise. He’s responsible for creating scripted shows like “The Act,” which focuses on Gypsy Rose Blanchard, as well as “Candy” about Candy Montgomery and “A Friend of the Family” centered around Jan Broberg.

He is repped by WME and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
