To my delight, I found myself witnessing an unexpected triumph as Jason Statham’s action-packed masterpiece, “A Working Man,” dominated the box office with a staggering $15.2 million in its opening weekend. This powerhouse production, helmed by the talented David Ayer of “Suicide Squad” fame, and produced by Amazon MGM, sent shockwaves through the cinema world, toppling the reigning champion, Disney’s “Snow White.” In its second outing, “Snow White” suffered a significant blow, plummeting by an astounding 66% or more. Quite an exciting turn of events indeed!
Following a sluggish $45 million opening, Disney’s live-action reboot of the beloved fairy tale has slipped to second place, earning $14.2 million from 4,200 cinemas. Starring Rachel Zegler as the title character and Gal Gadot as the wicked queen, “Snow White” has amassed a total of $66.8 million domestically and $143.1 million globally so far. Given its production cost exceeding $250 million (not including marketing costs), “Snow White” needs to demonstrate strong box office performance to recoup its substantial investment. It will encounter competition for family audiences as the Warner Bros. film adaptation of “A Minecraft Movie” debuts next week.
The movie titled ‘A Working Man’ received a mix of positive and negative feedback, earning a ‘B’ rating on CinemaScore surveys. In this film, Statham portrays a retired military veteran who is coaxed out of his retirement when human traffickers abduct his boss’s daughter. This initial performance lags slightly behind Ayer and Statham’s upcoming collaboration with Amazon MGM in 2024, ‘The Beekeeper.’ The latter film had a strong start by generating $16 million upon release and eventually grossed an impressive $66 million domestically and a commendable $162 million worldwide.
In the meantime, three other movies – “The Woman in the Yard” from Universal and Blumhouse, “Death of a Unicorn” by A24, and “The Chosen: Last Supper” by Fathom – were released nationwide. However, none of them made a substantial impact at the box office. This has led to a continued sluggishness in overall revenues, with ticket sales currently 7% lower than 2024 figures and a staggering 39% below the 2019 levels, as reported by Comscore.
The TV series titled ‘The Chosen: Last Supper,’ which focuses on Jesus and his disciples from a religious perspective, made its debut in third place, earning an impressive $11.5 million over the weekend from 2,235 theaters. Fathom Events plans to screen the fifth season of this show in cinemas for a span of two weeks per episode.
Ranked fourth during its debut weekend, “The Woman in the Yard” generated $9.4 million from a total of 2,842 cinemas. The film features Danielle Deadwyler and tells the story of a family who encounter an enigmatic woman in their yard, who gives them an ominous message without any explanation. Both critics and viewers found the movie less appealing, assigning it a “C-” grade on CinemaScore and a 39% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fortunately, its production cost was relatively low at $12 million.
In fifth place, we have “Death of a Unicorn,” a horror-comedy produced by A24, earning $5.8 million in 3,050 cinemas. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega play a father-daughter duo who encounter unforeseen consequences when they accidentally run over and kill a mythical creature. This box office revenue represents an upgrade compared to A24’s previous wide release, “Opus,” the surrealist comedy, which has only managed to gross $1.8 million so far.
In a restricted launch, the drama “The Friend,” distributed by Bleecker Street and featuring Naomi Watts as a woman who takes in her friend’s Great Dane following his suicide, was shown on two screens in New York City, earning a weekend gross of $66,853 per screen, averaging $33,426. In contrast, Sony Pictures Classics chose to release the Steve Coogan dramedy “The Penguin Lessons” on 1,017 screens nationwide, where it brought in $1.2 million.
