Jason Reitman’s ‘SNL’ Movie Officially Titled ‘Saturday Night,’ Sony Sets October Release Date

As a film critic with a lifelong obsession with comedy and Saturday Night Live (SNL), I can barely contain my excitement for Jason Reitman’s upcoming movie, “Saturday Night.” With its October 11, 2024 release date falling on the same day as SNL’s first broadcast in 1975, it promises to be a nostalgic and entertaining journey back to the genesis of one of TV’s most iconic institutions.

The film directed by Jason Reitman, which focuses on the premiere episode of “Saturday Night Live”, is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 11, 2024.

The chosen release date carries a special significance because it coincides with October 11, the very day that the iconic comedy series (set to debut its 50th season this autumn) made its initial airing back in the day.

Around eleven-thirty at night, as per the movie’s account, “a fearless gang of up-and-coming comedy legends rewrote television history.” Titled “Saturday Night” by Sony Pictures, this film delves into the untold events unfolding backstage during the crucial 90 minutes before airtime. Brimming with laughter, pandemonium, and the thrill of a near-miss revolution, we join them in a real-time ticking clock race towards the iconic phrase: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” (As a movie buff, I would express it like this.)

“On Saturday Night,” which is directed by Reitman, was written by him in collaboration with his “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” co-writer Gil Kenan. They based their script on a series of conversations they had with the current cast, writers, and crew members involved in the iconic production for research.

In 1975, NBC aired the debut of “SNL” with George Carlin as host, accompanied by musical acts Billy Preston and Janis Ian. The first episode featured a talented ensemble cast that included Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Michael O’Donoghue, and Gilda Radner. Notable appearances were also made by George Coe (who would not rejoin the cast) and comedian Andy Kaufman. The variety show was created by Dick Ebersol and managed by Lorne Michaels, who continues to oversee the popular series as its head.

The movie features a diverse group of actors, including Gabriel LaBelle as Michaels, Dylan O’Brien as Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith as Chase, Rachel Sennott as Shuster, Lamorne Morris as Morris, Nicholas Braun as Henson, Finn Wolfhard as an NBC page, Jon Batiste as Preston, Ella Hunt as Radnor, Cooper Hoffman as Ebersol, Andrew Barth Feldman as Neil Levy, Naomi McPherson as Ian, Willem Defoe as David Tebet, J.K. Simmons as Milton Berle, and Kaia Gerber as Jacqueline Carlin, alongside others.

Reitman and Kenan, who have a producing deal with Sony that resulted in the hit sequels “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empires”, are also involved in producing this feature film along with Jason Blumenfeld and Peter Rice. The executive producers for this project are Erica Mills and JoAnn Perritano.
