It’s clear that Jason Momoa wasn’t joking when he mentioned that portraying Lobo, the comic book character, was a significant goal for him. Recently, on platform X, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn disclosed the text message Momoa sent him after it was announced in autumn 2022 that Gunn and Peter Safran would be taking charge of Warner Bros.’ superhero division. The message was straightforward: “Lobo, indeed!
“Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years. No lie,” Gunn wrote back to the actor at the time.
Reflecting back on this special day, the anniversary of Lobo, I find myself reminiscing about a message I received from Jason Momoa on the very morning when Peter and I were announced as the heads of DC Studios. That was the day Jason and I first talked about him joining the DC Universe as Lobo. It’s been a delight to see him breathe life into this character, and I can hardly wait to share that experience with all of you.
In the upcoming production “Supergirl: World of Tomorrow,” Jason Momoa takes on the role of Lobo. This superhero movie, featuring Milly Alcock portraying Kara Zor-El, is slated to be the second installment in Gunn and Safran’s revamped DC Universe after James Gunn’s “Superman” (starring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane), set to hit theaters this July. Craig Gillespie is directing, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley portraying Ruthye Mary Knolle in the film.
Back in December, I, as a die-hard movie enthusiast, had my heart racing when it was officially confirmed that I’d be stepping into the role of Lobo. To share the exciting news with fellow fans, I took to Instagram and posted a quote from an earlier interview I did with Fandango, where I talked about my longstanding desire to embody this iconic character.
The person mentioned has a passion for comics, particularly Lobo, who has always been their favorite character. They’ve expressed a desire to portray this role in the past, stating that it seems like an ideal fit for them. During an interview, they expressed enthusiasm about the possibility, saying if given the opportunity, they would eagerly accept. However, they haven’t yet received a call for the role, so they want to avoid spreading false information.
Jason Momoa portrayed Aquaman within Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, featuring prominently in two individual films and “Justice League.” However, his tenure as the character concluded post the 2023 release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Interestingly, prior to this movie’s premiere, Momoa had already expressed a desire for a fresh role within Gunn’s revamped universe.
In 2022, when Entertainment Tonight asked Momoa about Peter Safran and Mr. Gunn taking charge at DC, he expressed his excitement, saying, “With them leading the way now, I can’t wait to see what they have in store! Some amazing things are on the horizon, including a dream of mine coming true while they’re in charge, so keep an eye out!
Momoa’s Lobo debut will be seen when “Supergirl” opens in theaters on June 26, 2026.
On Lobo’s anniversary, I find myself reflecting on a message I received from Jason Momoa early that very day when Peter and I were named co-heads of DC Studios.
