Jason Momoa & Justin Lin’s ‘Helldivers’ Video Game Adaptation Gets Exciting Update

Okay, so Jason Momoa’s been linked to a bunch of video game adaptations, and it looks like one of them is really starting to come together. I was hearing it was just a cool idea with a famous face attached, but now it sounds like the studio is seriously putting some muscle behind it – they’ve got key people and things in place, which is a great sign. I’m getting pretty excited about this one!

The project is called Helldivers. Jason Momoa will star in the upcoming live-action movie, currently planned to hit theaters on November 10, 2027. Justin Lin is directing, Gary Dauberman wrote the script, and PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures are producing the film.

Sony announced at CinemaCon that they’re starting pre-production on a Helldivers project very soon, making it feel more likely to happen than many video game adaptations. The timing is perfect for Sony, as the Helldivers franchise gained huge popularity after the release of Helldivers 2 in 2024, turning it from a niche game into a well-known brand.

The game’s popularity is a great start, but what really makes a movie adaptation exciting is the world of Helldivers itself. The games center around highly skilled soldiers protecting “Super Earth” from alien invasions – think massive bugs and robotic enemies – all within a sci-fi military setting. What’s unique is that the game leans into its over-the-top, propaganda-filled premise with a lot of satire. While it’s not confirmed yet, Jason Momoa is likely to play a key soldier, possibly a character similar to the classic “John Helldiver” or another frontline fighter.

I recently heard Justin Lin say something that really resonated with me about ‘Helldivers’. He believes the film manages to strike a really interesting balance between sharp satire and genuine human moments, and he thinks Jason Momoa is the only actor who could truly make that work. I totally get what he means – it’s a tricky combination, and Momoa has that rare ability to be both funny and deeply affecting.

Jason Momoa commands attention on screen, making him perfect for a big, fantastical story like this one. A serious, straightforward adaptation might not capture the fun, but going too silly could ruin the epic scope that made the original so popular. This is why Justin Lin’s direction is exciting – his Fast & Furious movies prove he knows how to deliver thrilling action, build a strong team of characters, and create massive, impressive scenes.

Mike Dauberman is an intriguing addition to the project. While he’s primarily known for horror films like It and Annabelle Comes Home, his experience could actually be a great fit for Helldivers. The game’s overwhelming enemies and intense atmosphere share similarities with horror, even though the overall feel is different.

This film adds to Jason Momoa’s recent work adapting video games, following projects like Street Fighter and A Minecraft Movie. While not every game adaptation is a success – we’ve already seen how tricky it can be to get these movies right – Helldivers seems to have a better starting point than most.
