As an avid sports enthusiast and admirer of Jason Kelce‘s captivating persona, I am thrilled to witness his foray into the world of late-night television. His 13-season run in the NFL has not only showcased his gridiron prowess but also revealed his knack for engaging audiences with his larger-than-life personality.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’m all set to storm the dominion of late-night TV hosts with a short-lived show airing during the small hours on ESPN.
Jason Kelce’s Late Night Show” will be broadcast for five consecutive nights as we approach the late-season NFL weekends on ESPN. The show starts at 1 a.m. on Saturdays, beginning January 4th, and concludes at 1:30 a.m. This one-hour program is recorded live in Philadelphia, where Kelce spent 13 seasons playing football, and he will engage with a live audience at Union Transfer. Each episode is taped on Friday nights, right before it airs.
It’s uncertain if ESPN plans to involve Kelce in their late-night programming, but it’s rumored that this was a venture he expressed interest in when he joined ESPN earlier this year. This role seems to have been intended for him as a significant part of “Monday Night Countdown,” the show that precedes “Monday Night Football.
At the time he was hired in May, Disney and ESPN mentioned they would “look into more possibilities.
Kelce is recognized not only for his exceptional skills on the football field, but also for his larger-than-life persona. Alongside his brother, Travis, he co-hosts the well-liked weekly podcast, “New Heights,” and has made several TV appearances, one of which was at WrestleMania, produced by the WWE.
He plans to conduct a late-evening move during a generally secure time slot. Notably, none of the popular late-night shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC broadcast originals on Friday nights anymore. The primary Friday-night option, HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” airs earlier in the evening. As for late-night programs catering to sports enthusiasts, many of them are already shown on ESPN, where Scott Van Pelt hosts a nightly version of “SportsCenter.
The upcoming show is likely to feature elements that regular late-night viewers have grown fond of. For instance, there’ll be live performances by the band Snacktime from Philadelphia. Additionally, the host Kelce and his guests will discuss the upcoming weekend sports games. They’ll also invite spectators at the venue to participate in the show.
The programming gambit should, at the very least, draw younger crowds to NFL play. The show will debut hours before the last weekend of NFL regular-season play, with subsequent hours leading into Super Wild Card, Divisional and Conference Championship weekends before the finale ahead of the Pro Bowl Games and nine days from Super Bowl LIX.
As a movie reviewer, I’m excited to share that starting soon, you’ll have multiple ways to catch the latest NFL show! Originally airing on ESPN, each episode will also be accessible on ESPN+, their YouTube channel, and the Jason Kelce channel on YouTube, all brought to you by ESPN. For those who miss the live broadcast, re-runs will play on ESPN2. NFL Films is partnering with Wooderboy Productions (Jason Kelce’s company) and Skydance Sports for this exciting production. So, get ready to enjoy the action from various platforms!
Initially, the series nods to history by referencing it in its title, echoing “They Call It Pro Football,” the pioneering NFL Films’ first full-length production. This classic feature was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2012, recognized as a groundbreaking example of televised football and sports after their inception. Whether Kelce’s new project will earn similar acclaim remains to be seen.
