Jared Harris Acted in ‘Morbius’ Flop Because ‘I’ve Got a Mortgage to Pay’ and ‘Sometimes You Say Yes to Things Because You Need to Make Money’

As a long-time fan of captivating performances and immersive storytelling, it is disheartening to see such a talented actor like Jared Harris lend his craft to a film as disappointing as “Morbius.” Despite his impressive resume, even an Emmy-nominated actor like Harris can find himself in less-than-stellar projects when the need for financial stability arises.

Jared Harris’ illustrious acting journey encompasses Emmy-nominated portrayals in “Mad Men” and “The Crown,” along with roles in films like David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” Despite this impressive resume, his part in Jared Leto’s controversial comic book film “Morbius” seems unexpected. However, at times, actors must take on roles to meet their financial needs.

As I shared with the i newspaper in Britain, my current financial obligations demand attention – specifically, paying off a mortgage. Occasionally, opportunities arise that I can’t refuse due to their potential monetary benefits, and taking on the role in “Morbius” was one of those instances.

When asked about the issues with the movie, Harris commented: “I think comedic films work best when they’re humorous. They shouldn’t be treated like Shakespearean plays. In hindsight, the movie could have benefited from a more playful and mischievous sense of humor.

In “Morbius,” Jared Harris played Dr. Emil Nicholas, a character who serves as both mentor and father figure to Michael Morbius, portrayed by Jared Leto, and Milo Morbius, acted by Matt Smith. The movie received largely negative reviews from critics (it has a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 287 reviews) and flopped at the box office, earning $167 million globally. In North America alone, “Morbius” managed to bring in just $73 million.

Smith expressed that Rolling Stone UK last year, “Yes, ‘Morbius’ flopped, but you need to adapt. What can you do? In the end, it’s a movie, not a matter of life or death. For some reason, things didn’t quite go as planned, and… That’s just how it is.

Critic Owen Gleiberman harshly criticized the movie “Morbius,” stating that it’s neither innovative nor high-quality. According to him, “Morbius” follows typical Marvel patterns, with Jared Leto’s character transitioning from scientist to vampire being just another predictable element. The entire film, directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, seems generic – it’s frustratingly so, almost shockingly so. Watching it leaves you wondering, ‘Is this what we consider a fresh Marvel installment now?’
