Japanese Producers Call for Safety Investigation After Cannes Falling Palm Tree Accident

The makers of “Brand New Landscape” from Japan are pushing for a prompt inquiry following an incident where one of their producers got hurt when a palm tree fell on them during the Cannes Film Festival.

This year, “Brand New Landscape” was chosen as part of the program for Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, having been created by Siglo Co., Ltd. and LesPros Entertainment Co., Ltd.

On Saturday, May 17th, 2025 (local time), an unexpected incident took place around noon as the team was traveling to a Directors’ Fortnight event. As they strolled along the Boulevard de la Croisette promenade by the beach, a tall palm tree unexpectedly collapsed. One of the LesPros Entertainment production team members accompanying the cast was hit by the falling tree and suffered injuries as a result.” (This statement was provided to EbMaster by the production companies.)

Upon being hurt, the producer was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital by emergency responders. A medical evaluation revealed breaks in the nose and various other body parts. Thankfully, the producer remained awake and is now in a stable state. Further medical care and recovery will be managed professionally.

According to what they said, the companies haven’t been given an official account about the incident from the festival organizers or local officials yet.

Since the Cannes Film Festival is still happening, and the occurrence happened in a busy spot, we deeply wish for a quick investigation into what caused it and the adoption of protective measures so similar incidents don’t reoccur in the future,” the statement expresses.

EbMaster has reached out to the festival for comment.
