Japanese man sells Ferrari to fund shelter for dogs after one saved his life

A 54-year-old Japanese entrepreneur, who was the owner of a thriving business and a luxury sports car, decided to sell them both in order to support a dog sanctuary. This move came about as a result of his beloved pet dog helping him through a difficult time when he had attempted suicide.

Instead of pursuing a career in business, Hirotaka Saito chose to dedicate his life to giving troubled dogs a new lease on life by founding the Wansfree Canine Rescue in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Twelve years back, facing severe financial difficulties at his workplace, he found himself motivated to take a sudden drastic step. The circumstances were so bleak that he contemplated leaving his home and even considered ending his life as a means of escape from his predicament.

It seemed as though his dog had a sixth sense about Saito’s plans, blocking his exit at the front door. Now, he attributes the dog’s actions with having saved his life. To repay this debt, Saito is dedicating his efforts to helping other dogs find loving homes for the long term.

At Wansfree Canine Rescue, they accept dogs who have unfortunately been given up or left behind because of challenging behaviors such as barking and snapping. These actions, as noted by Saito, are frequently the consequence of mistreatment or negligence.

In an interview with local media, Saito expressed, “Once I understood that a dog had saved me, I decided to dedicate the remainder of my life to rescuing canines. I’m determined to use every penny I have for their welfare. I want them to feel cherished.

In order to finance the rescue effort, Saito chose to sell his business and parted ways with his Ferrari as well. The earnings from these transactions were then utilized to acquire a piece of land, on which he constructed a spacious facility that allows dogs to run and play freely, an open-range center.

Currently, Wansfree Canine Rescue accommodates approximately 40 dogs and 8 cats. However, Saito remains optimistic that the shelter could potentially accommodate up to 300 animals by the year 2028.

“I am better off now than ever. I am so fortunate to be able to realize that,” Saito said.

Recently, a heartwarming incident involving a gentleman and his dog treats at the Oceanside, California beach has taken social media by storm. Earlier this year, this retired individual became an internet sensation when he was seen giving tasty morsels to stray dogs roaming around the shoreline.
