Lawson unveils its inaugural advanced convenience store in Tokyo, integrating artificial intelligence and robotics to combat workforce scarcity and enhance shopping experiences.

Located in Takanawa Gateway City and opened on June 23, the latest Lawson store employs 14 AI cameras within its premises to observe shopper behavior instantaneously. As reported by The Mainichi, these cameras function by suggesting items based on customer actions, such as offering coffee when a customer picks up a dessert, or showcasing popular products if a shopper seems uncertain at a shelf.

Touchscreens offer shoppers the convenience of viewing comprehensive product details, whereas bigger screens positioned above shelves provide instant suggestions and notifications about newly prepared goods such as fried chicken and similar items in real-time.

In addition to its advanced features, this future-oriented store goes a step further by employing robots for tasks like cooking and lifting heavier items. This is particularly handy during restocking periods when human staff might need a break. Meanwhile, AI technology works behind the scenes, examining footage and workflow data to enhance staff productivity.

Lawson aims to decrease in-store workforce by about 30% by the year 2030, with intentions to expand its advanced store concept to additional sites within Japan and beyond.

In simpler terms, President Sadanobu Takemasu of Lawson mentioned they’re planning a unique type of convenience store by merging real-world and technology. Their goal is to elevate customer service while boosting productivity in operations, which will free up time for more valuable activities.

It’s not new that robots are being utilized in Japanese convenience stores; FamilyMart started testing their AI-controlled beverage-stacking robot (TX SCARA) back in late November 2021, with the goal of decreasing human workload and enhancing productivity.
