Japan Football Association launches US talent camp inspired by sports anime Blue Lock

The Japan Football Association is turning the popular anime series Blue Lock into a real-life training camp, hoping to find and develop the next generation of professional soccer players.

The 2026 World Cup is almost here, and fans everywhere are excitedly debating which country has the best chance of winning.

Okay, so out of all the countries competing, Japan is doing something really cool! They’re launching a training camp called FUTURE CAMP, and it’s totally based on ‘Blue Lock’ – you know, that awesome anime about soccer? It’s officially supported by the show, which is pretty epic.

Blue Lock follows a group of young footballers all striving to make Japan’s national team. To discover exceptional new players, the Japan Football Union recruits Jinpachi Ego, who creates an incredibly demanding training program called ‘Blue Lock’. Success means a place on the world stage, but failure means their dreams are over.

What is the Japan Football Association’s FUTURE CAMP?

Future Camp offers a more relaxed approach to player scouting. Held August 3-6 in Irvine, California, it’s the Japan Football Association’s first large-scale talent search program held outside of Japan.

This program is an intensive training camp for promising athletes. They’ll be coached and assessed by a team of experts – 10 coaches from the Japan Football Association and 5 players who are contenders for the U-15 Japan national team. Training will include focused drills, physical and skill evaluations, and plenty of actual game play.

How to apply for Blue Lock-inspired FUTURE CAMP

The training camp is exclusively for young Americans of Japanese heritage. To qualify, participants must be Japanese citizens, have at least one parent who is Japanese, or potentially be able to become Japanese citizens later on.

To apply, you must have been born between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2011, meaning you should be between 15 and 16 years old.

Young footballers who are interested can apply online between May 11th and June 12th, 2026. The results will be announced in late June 2026. We’ll be looking at things like their current team, the type of football they play, which league they’re in, and any previous team selections. We’ll also evaluate their skills and athleticism by watching videos of them playing.

According to Japan Football Association president Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, Japanese football is increasingly global, and the days of players developing exclusively in Japan are finished. This new program aims to find and nurture promising players from all over the world, integrating them into the Japanese football system.

Muneyuki Kaneshiro, the creator of Blue Lock, shared his excitement about the camp, calling it a real-life version of his manga. He explained that his passion for creating Blue Lock connected with the dreams of dedicated football fans, leading to this unique talent-discovery program. He hopes the camp will unearth players even more exceptional than those featured in the series.

Blue Lock isn’t new to partnering with official sports organizations. Back in the summer of 2025, it collaborated with the soccer association for North, Central America, and the Caribbean to create special content and exclusive merchandise.
