Janus Films has secured the rights for all North American screenings of “The Love That Remains,” the latest movie from director Hlynur Pálmason, who is also known for “Godland.” This film had its world premiere in the Cannes Premieres section at this month’s Cannes Film Festival. The arrangement was made through discussions between Janus Films and New Europe Film Sales.
This partnership represents the second time that Janus Films has teamed up with Pálmason, following their collaboration on “Godland” – a film that first appeared in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the category of Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards.
The movie titled ‘The Love That Remains’ follows a family for a year as they deal with their separation. The film presents a mix of joyful and emotional scenes that capture the bittersweet feelings of waning love and cherished memories, set against the backdrop of different seasons.
The movie features Saga Garðarsdóttir (from “Woman at War”), Sverrir Gudnason (known for “Borg Vs. McEnroe”), Ida Mekkín Hlynsdóttir (“Godland”), Þorgils Hlynsson (“Nest”) and Grímur Hlynsson, also from “Nest”.
As a movie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel excited after learning about Hlynur Pálmason’s latest creation, ‘The Love That Remains.’ In an era that feels overly digital, this film serves as a refreshing balm. Its visual grandeur is reminiscent of his masterpiece ‘Godland,’ yet it offers a playful, humorous, and strikingly contemporary perspective.
With its bold exploration of family, beauty, peril, love, work, and the natural world, this film embodies a fearless freedom that breathes life into every frame. I’m delighted to continue my cinematic adventure with Hlynur, eagerly anticipating the moment when North American audiences will have the chance to experience its magic too.
Pálmason expressed his delight and gratitude at collaborating once more with Janus Films, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to share this new film with North American audiences. The partnership on ‘Godland’ was fruitful, and he is thrilled to expand upon that success with another unique production.
The movie earned the Palm Dog award, a recognition that was given to director Hlynur Pálmason’s Icelandic dog named Panda, for delivering the most outstanding canine acting at the festival.
The film titled ‘The Love That Remains’ was crafted by Anton Máni Svansson at Still Vivid, with Katrin Pors at Snowglobe; it also received co-production from Hobab, Maneki Films, Film i Väst, and Arte France Cinema.
The financial backing was provided by the Icelandic Film Centre, Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs in Iceland, Danish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond (twice), Swedish Film Institute, Creative Europe MEDIA, Hornafjörður Municipality, RÚV, Jour2Fête, ARTE, Max Distribution, SVT, and DR. In simpler terms, this project was funded by a variety of institutions including the Icelandic Film Centre, government departments in Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Europe, local municipalities, broadcasters, film institutes, and distribution companies.
Janus Films has previously distributed films such as Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning “Drive My Car,” Jerzy Skolimowski’s Oscar-nominated “Eo,” Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Grand Prix winner “All We Imagine As Light,” and Gints Zibalodis’ “Flow.” The latter turned out to be their highest-earning film at the box office, also winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Thus far in the current year, Janus Films has unveiled “Misericordia” by Alain Guiraudie, “The Shrouds” by David Cronenberg, and “Caught by the Tides” by Jia Zhangke. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s thriller “Cloud” is set to debut in July, while Ira Sachs’ “Peter Hujar’s Day” has been scheduled for release later this fall. Additionally, Janus Films recently acquired “Resurrection,” a film by Bi Gan that had its premiere in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
