As a devotee of cinema with a penchant for documentaries and journalism, I find myself utterly thrilled by the upcoming recognition of two titans in their respective fields: Jane Pauley and Alex Gibney.
Journalist and author Jane Pauley, along with documentary maker Alex Gibney, will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards at this year’s 45th News & Documentary Emmys. This announcement was made on Wednesday by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
On Wednesday, September 25, Pauley, who is the presenter of “CBS News Sunday Morning,” will receive her award during the news awards ceremony at New York’s Palladium Times Square. The event will also be live-streamed on NATAS’ viewing app. Meanwhile, Gibney will be recognized during the Documentary awards ceremony on Thursday, September 26. Both ceremonies will be held at the same venue.
Adam Sharp, head of NATAS, expressed: “We feel privileged to honor these two industry legends, Jane Pauley and Alex Gibney. They consistently engage viewers while simultaneously paving the way for those following in their footsteps,” said Adam Sharp, president/CEO of NATAS in a statement. This recognition is not just about their impressive longevity in a competitive field, but also the vast influence they’ve had on the industry, their audiences, and society at large. NATAS is proud to acknowledge their unwavering commitment to outstanding television.”
I, much like Pauley, have amassed a remarkable collection of accolades throughout my career. I’ve been honored with four Daytime Emmy Awards, five News & Documentary Emmy Awards, a Sports Emmy Award, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Outstanding Achievement, and the Gracie Allen Award from the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television.
“Pauley expressed heartfelt gratitude for this recognition, calling it an unparalleled privilege. He attributes his successful career to collaborations with the crème de la crème in journalism and innovative minds. Throughout his journey, change and opportunities have been his consistent companions rather than a steady climb. Instead, his career has been more like a meandering path that culminated in his cherished role as host of ‘CBS News Sunday Morning’.”
Alex Gibney, who has a long list of accolades to his name, includes an Oscar, multiple Emmy Awards (News & Documentary, Primetime, and Writers Guild), a Grammy, six Peabody Awards, and six Writers Guild Awards. He was honored with an Oscar in 2008 for “Taxi to the Dark Side,” and in 2006 he received a nomination for “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.” His HBO documentary “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God” garnered several Emmys and a Peabody, while his Showtime film “The History of the Eagles” also earned an Emmy. Some other films by Gibney are “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown,” “The Armstrong Lie,” “We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks,” the award-winning “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” “Sinatra: All or Nothing at All,” “Steve Jobs: The Man in The Machine,” and “The Forever Prisoner.” His two-part series on David Chase, titled “Wise Guys,” will make its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival and become available on Max later this year. Currently, Gibney is working on the documentaries “Musk” about Elon Musk and “Knife,” inspired by Salman Rushdie’s memoir “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder.”
“Gibney expressed heartfelt gratitude, humility, and deep honor for receiving this award. He emphasized that while his name is on it, he sees it as a significant acknowledgment of the contributions made by his colleagues throughout the years – his producers, cinematographers, but most importantly, his editors. This recognition brings to mind Muhammad Ali’s poignant two-word poem created during a speech at Harvard: ‘Me, We.'”
As a longtime television enthusiast who has been following the Emmy Awards since its inception, I am thrilled to announce that this year, I will be able to witness the 45th News & Documentary Emmy® Awards live, thanks to NATAS’ viewing platform. Being able to watch this prestigious event from the comfort of my own home is a dream come true. With the convenience of streaming on multiple devices such as smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs, I can now access the awards ceremony with just a few clicks. Whether I’m using my iPhone, Apple TV, or Android device, I can catch all the excitement and drama unfold as the winners are announced. I am particularly excited to watch the News & Documentary categories, as these programs often tackle important social issues and provide valuable insights into current events. Overall, I can hardly wait for the 45th News & Documentary Emmy® Awards and I am grateful to NATAS for making it possible for me to be a part of this special night.
