James Woods Says ‘Oppenheimer’ EP Credit Was Kept Quiet After It Was ‘Suggested’ His Pro-Trump Twitter Could Screw Up the Rollout: ‘It Was Painful…I Took One for the Team’

As a movie lover and someone who has followed James Woods‘ career for decades, I find it disheartening to hear about his exclusion from the promotion and recognition of “Oppenheimer,” a film he played a significant role in producing. It’s no secret that Woods is known for his outspoken conservative views, which have put him at odds with certain elements of Hollywood.

James Woods shared with Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM radio show that he was politely requested not to publicize Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” a film where Woods served as an executive producer following his acquisition of the rights to the non-fiction book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, which inspired Nolan’s script. The movie was a massive success with over $975 million in global earnings (the highest-grossing biopic ever) and received numerous Oscars for best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, and more.

After the premiere of “Oppenheimer,” there were conversations about my Twitter activity, and I was advised quietly to keep a low profile. This advice hurt me since I’ve publicly supported Donald Trump in the past, which may have put me at risk for the film’s release and awards consideration.

“Instead, I identify as a practical person, and I pondered over the fact that many have invested significant time and resources into this endeavor. Consequently, I don’t wish to be an unseen outcast among those who hold the power to bestow Oscars. These individuals play a crucial role in the financial success and historical significance of films.”

Woods expressed concern that the “Oppenheimer” team wouldn’t have to handle someone acting erratically and spreading false rumors about him and his traditional beliefs (“I’ve heard a million of those before, they’re all fabrications,” he remarked).

“Woods expressed his displeasure, stating, ‘I don’t want the sensational headline to read, “James Woods Produces Controversial Movie”.’ Since I wasn’t even invited to the Producers Guild Awards despite being a producer myself, I made the decision to detach from the project.”

“Oppenheimer” clinched the highest honor at the Producers Guild of America Awards, mirroring its success at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, SAG Awards, and Oscars. However, as an executive producer, Woods wasn’t recognized in the film’s Oscar nomination and win for Best Picture. Instead, the top accolades went to the primary producers Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

For some time now, Woods has avoided the limelight in Hollywood. He openly expressed his backing for Trump and as a result, lost the representation of his agent a few years ago. The last appearance of Woods on screen was in two episodes of “Dice,” Andrew Dice Clay’s short-lived sitcom, which aired in 2017.
