As a longtime Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall (and rise again) of various superheroes and villains since the golden age of comics, I must say that the return of Ultron, played masterfully by James Spader, is an exciting development for fans like me. With Paul Bettany’s Vision being resurrected not once, but twice in recent years, it appears that Marvel Studios has a compelling narrative ready to unfold in this untitled series set to premiere in 2026.
Ultron will return.
In the upcoming Vision series by Marvel Studios, James Spader will once again take on the character of the malevolent AI, a role he played in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” from 2015, alongside Paul Bettany.
Terry Matalas, known for “Star Trek: Picard,” has been appointed as executive producer and showrunner for the upcoming series set to air in 2026. Despite seemingly meeting his end in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” Vision was miraculously brought back to life on the 2021 series “WandaVision.” Initially, he appeared as a magical construct, only to be undone, and later resurrected as a spectral robot devoid of any recollections from his past.
When Ultron reappears, it’s likely to cause issues for Vision because they share a complex past. Originally, Ultron designed Vision’s synthetic body, intending it as a permanent dwelling for his AI, but the Avengers intervened and inserted Tony Stark’s AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. into the body instead, thus creating Vision. In “Age of Ultron,” Vision engaged in a confrontation with the final robot containing Ultron’s consciousness, apparently destroying it; however, this scene was not shown on screen. The announcement of James Spader’s return indicates that some form of Ultron did indeed survive.
The Vision series is Marvel’s first new live-action show in nearly two years.
