The teaser trailer for James Gunn’s version of Superman has been dominating the internet since its release last December. Predictions suggest that the initial movie in the revamped DC Universe will start with a big impact, but this isn’t by chance. Warner Bros. has launched a strong, comprehensive marketing strategy for Superman, and if recent budget reports are accurate, they are backing their claims with substantial investment.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and DC Studios spent approximately $225 million on the production of Superman, with marketing costs reaching an estimated $200 million. This brings the total cost of the DCU film to over $400 million. Spending around $150 million on marketing is not unusual for significant blockbusters, but the rounded-up figure indicates that WB and DC have a high level of confidence in Superman’s potential box office success. The record-breaking viewership of the trailer and early audience excitement suggest that a $175 million opening weekend at the domestic box office could be expected.
More to come.
