Instead of using press releases and major online events to unveil new films, James Gunn, the director of Superman and co-president of DC Studios, opts for a casual, understated approach on social media. Known for keeping his fan base informed by utilizing platforms like Threads to address fan queries and disclose updates, Gunn has been particularly active with the upcoming Superman movie starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, which is set to debut in less than a month. While fans eagerly awaited details about Superman, Gunn has delivered, yet he also hinted that a fresh project is currently under development.
One fan among many who asked James Gunn about the “Superman” movie on Instagram (via The Direct) inquired about the film’s best boy potentially having a solo focus. The comment read, “I’d be happy if we got an animated spin-off series just for Krypto.” Krypto, the faithful canine companion of Clark Kent in the comics, has long been eagerly anticipated by DC Comics fans to appear in live-action on the big screen, and seeing him finally come to life is a source of great excitement.
Concerning Krypto’s individual series, what initially seemed like a fan’s wishful thinking might turn out to be more reality than expected. Although the animated show hasn’t been officially announced by DC Studios or Max yet, Gunn hinted that it is being developed at DC Studios. His reply, though cryptic, was optimistic. Few fans would grumble about Krypto getting an animated spin-off. From the very first sneak peek of Superman, Krypto stole every scene he appeared in, and fans hope to see the character with a lasting presence on both big and small screens within the DC Universe.
The DCU’s Confirmed Upcoming TV Shows
If it’s confirmed that Krypto the Wonderdog gets his own standalone animated series, it would mark the eighth show from DC Studios in the revamped DC Universe. Audiences have already enjoyed the initial offering, which was the 2024 release of “Creature Commandos,” a series centering around the undead and supernatural members of the Suicide Squad, under the leadership of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo). Following close behind in this year’s lineup, John Cena is set to reprise his role for Season 2 of “Peacemaker.
From a film enthusiast’s perspective, the latest addition to my watchlist is the upcoming series titled “Lanterns”. In this intriguing narrative, we delve into the lives of Hal Jordan, brilliantly portrayed by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, brought to life by Aaron Pierre – two Earth-bound Green Lanterns. They find themselves entangled in a perplexing murder mystery. Interestingly, Amanda Waller, who made an appearance in “Creature Commandos”, is set to return and will also star in her own live-action series. However, the development of this project featuring Viola Davis has been stagnant since its initial announcement.
It appears that there haven’t been many significant updates about DCU’s other upcoming series like Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, and the animated Blue Beetle in recent months. Despite confirmations for their development, it remains unknown when production will start or even when these shows might be released, as this information is kept within DC Studios at present.
