As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that the mighty Jason Momoa is stepping into a fresh role within the DC universe – none other than the infamous intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo! According to James Gunn, this character is crucial for the upcoming Supergirl movie.
In well-known fashion, Momoa portrayed Aquaman within the DC Extended Universe, bringing a final, dramatic flair to the series as he concluded it with an emphatic exit in The Lost Kingdom.
When it became known that Gunn was appointed to oversee DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, Momoa texted him with a message expressing his excitement, which read something like “Wow, Lobo!” or “Awesome, Lobo!” (as Lobo is a character from DC Comics that Momoa has expressed interest in playing).
The following year, the actor’s long-held aspiration is set to be realized in the series ‘Supergirl’. He is expected to make his first appearance there as the villain, provided he doesn’t show up in ‘Superman’, sharing the screen with Milly Alcock.
Lobo is a key part of the DCU’s Supergirl movie
During his interview on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gunn shared that the transformation of Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow comic into a movie required an additional element for Supergirl.
Essentially, “Woman of Tomorrow” – the comic series – consists of multiple short tales. However, for coherence, we decided to construct a single continuous narrative, divided into three acts. Conveniently, Lobo aided us in this endeavor, as Gunn clarified.
If you’re not acquainted with Lobo, he hails from the cosmic planet Czarnia, being the last of his kind and commonly referred to as “The Main Man”. His name has a chilling connotation in an old Khund language, translating to “the one who delights in consuming your innards”.
Originally appearing in Omega Men #3 back in 1983, this character had his background altered and updated over time. In 1990, he resurfaced in Lobo: The Last Czarnian, a four-issue series dedicated to him. This new storyline discarded earlier aspects of the character, instead portraying him as a mix of Wolverine and The Punisher-like caricature.
He’s not a combination of him and Craig [Gillespie, Supergirl’s director]. Each is an individual entity, distinctly their own. I admire Lobo,” Gunn explained further.
I’ve long believed he would make an excellent character for adaptation. In fact, I consider him one of the most iconic comic book characters yet to appear on screen. Therefore, it was quite exciting to see this project come to life.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, Momoa expressed his belief that he is the ideal choice for the part, saying: “I believe I’m the perfect fit for this role.
In case I’m ever cast for a role, make it Lobo! Bikes, cigars, parties, long locks… bring on the brawls, and let’s keep it light-hearted!
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement! I’m gearing up to witness the grand launch of DC Universe on July 11. And guess what? Supergirl will make her appearance a bit earlier on June 26, 2026. To keep tabs on more thrilling releases this year, don’t forget to check out our 2025 movie calendar!
