James Gunn has given fans a better understanding of how the revamped DC Universe will depict its two Kryptonian superheroes, Superman and Supergirl. Although they share a tragic past and immense power, Gunn outlined some key differences in their portrayals within the DCU. These characters are paving the way for Gunn’s reimagined DC universe; with “Superman” launching the universe on the big screen on July 11 and “Supergirl” following as the second cinematic release on June 26, 2026.
When asked by ComicBook if Krypton might be featured in the 2026 Supergirl series, following its title change from Woman of Tomorrow, James Gunn seized the opportunity to emphasize the primary emotional distinction between Superman and Supergirl.
As DC Studios co-head mentioned, their unique backgrounds play a crucial role in defining who they are. Gunn emphasized that Superman’s life on Earth was characterized by stability, with parents who loved him and a peaceful upbringing, which starkly contrasts with the tumultuous childhood of Kara Zor-El.
Indeed, it could be considered a possibility, but I strongly believe that those elements are crucial to defining the unique personalities of the characters. Furthermore, Clark Kent’s background is remarkably positive, with loving parents and a carefree upbringing, which sets him apart as one of the least troubled superheroes.
Gunn didn’t mince words about the troubled, painful journey that molded the DCU’s Supergirl: “‘She’s quite a wreck:’
Supergirl from the DC Universe, to put it mildly, has had quite a difficult past. She’s experienced numerous challenges during her upbringing, and this is reflected in the comics where she witnessed countless people perish before her eyes as part of her homeworld crumbled.
It was previously unclear, but Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl will differ significantly from David Corenswet’s Kal-El. Nevertheless, she is anticipated to appear in a cameo role in the upcoming Superman film this year. Following that, she will take center stage in her own movie titled Supergirl, slated for release next summer.
Under the direction of Craig Gillespie, the movie has already finished its main filming sessions and is set to be DC Comics’ significant summer blockbuster in 2026. Corenswet portraying Superman is expected to lead the revamped series, but Alcock as Supergirl will also have a significant part, joining established Trinity members such as Batman and Wonder Woman.
Joining in on the anticipation, it’s been announced that Jason Momoa will reappear in the DC Universe, but this time he’ll be portraying the merciless bounty hunter Lobo – a change from his previous heroic role (Aquaman). The upcoming film takes its cues from Tom King’s renowned comic series, promising a grittier, more introspective take on the character.
Setting The Tone of Kryptonians in the DCU
It’s clear that Tom King’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is going to have a significant impact on the upcoming movie, giving it a distinct edge compared to James Gunn’s “Superman.” Instead of maintaining the cheerful demeanor of Clark Kent, who grew up in Kansas as a boy scout, Kara Zor-El’s narrative will be more gritty and tumultuous. This darker tale will reflect her experiences with trauma, survival, and deep emotional turmoil.
The movie adaptation of “The King” comic book series focuses on Supergirl embarking on a cosmic quest for vengeance alongside a young alien girl named Ruthye. Much of the story unfolds when Supergirl is powerless and far from the protection of Earth, adding layers of moral complexity. This darker, contemplative tone is anticipated to provide a striking contrast to Superman’s more optimistic perspective, resulting in an intriguing balance in the upcoming DCU films.
It’s intriguing to consider how Superdog Krypto, who appears in both the King’s “Supergirl” comics and Gunn’s “Superman,” might function as a connecting element, weaving together the tales of Kara and Clark more seamlessly on-screen.
