James Gunn reveals new Supergirl title and explains ‘Superman: Legacy’ change

In a recent update, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is no longer going by that title, as per DC Studios’ co-chief James Gunn. He has also shared his reasons for removing “Legacy” from Superman’s name.

When Gunn initially revealed the “Gods and Monsters” segment of the revamped DC Universe, it was intended to commence with Superman: Legacy as the starting point.

In February 2024, Gunn revealed that the title had experienced a minor adjustment, and it will now be known as just Superman.

It seems that the approach taken with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl movie mirrors a previous decision. The name “Woman of Tomorrow” was coined from the comics, particularly Tom King’s Supergirl series, but Gunn and the leaders at DC have opted to abandon

Gunn clarified that he often makes changes, and he elaborated by saying that the name “Legacy” was removed from Superman’s title following its alteration after it had been created.

A “premortem” is a meeting where your project team gathers together, typically around two months before starting the actual work. The aim is for everyone to think hypothetically, ‘What could potentially lead to this project being a massive failure if we were to carry on as we are today?’ It’s important to note that during this discussion, everyone should feel free to express their thoughts openly.

In other productions, you might overhear murmurs such as, “Gosh, it’s puzzling to me why that particular actor was chosen for this part; I don’t think he suits the role.

Another way of putting it is, ‘The production designer is always running late.’ In discussions, I mentioned that the project we were working on was named Superman: Legacy. Although I was the one who suggested this name, I had some doubts about it.

Gunn admitted that he found the frequent use of “title, colon, other-name” pattern in superhero movie titles to be tiresome. He also pointed out that it felt like a throwback to the past when they were trying to move forward, despite the fact that it does relate to legacy within the film itself. And many people agreed, saying, “Oh yes, definitely, change it.

It seems like a good decision indeed. The latest Superman movie is projected to gross over $140 million in its initial domestic release, even when competing against films such as Jurassic World: Dominion and 28 Years Later in theaters.

During the same interview, Gunn also discussed Batman’s future within the DC Universe, including his thoughts on The Brave and the Bold project. It’s uncertain if he’s fully on board with the idea, but there are compelling reasons why Robert Pattinson could be an excellent choice for the DCU’s Batman.
