James Gunn Reveals MCU Director He Wants To Make a DCU Movie With

Recently, James Gunn shared his preferred directors for possible upcoming DC Universe films, and one of them has previously been involved in the realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What MCU director did James Gunn say he wanted to make a DCU movie with?

During a chat with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn was asked who he’d like to collaborate with in the DC Universe. He specifically mentioned Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther and Sinners, as one potential addition, and also suggested Matt Reeves and Greta Gerwig for another pair. The reason behind these choices is quite compelling.

Gunn expressed his affection for creators who continue to produce large-scale pop films with a personal touch, as he feels they’re taking daring risks in the realm of spectacle cinema. He noted that many current productions lack such boldness.

Gunn continued to express his disappointment towards modern “blockbuster films,” finding them monotonous due to their frequent similarities. He stated, “I’m a fan of mindless entertainment, but let’s make it enjoyable even if it’s disposable. I appreciate big popcorn movies, but they become tedious when they all seem alike.

It turns out that this isn’t the first occasion where Gunn has casually brought up Coogler. In fact, he shared that they recently had a conversation, reminiscing about the Black Panther premiere and the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding the movie.

After Superman’s release in 2025, James Gunn’s DC Universe will continue with the introduction of Supergirl, scheduled for June 26, 2026, and Clayface, currently slated for a release on September 11, 2026, in the movie world.
