As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the cosmic side of the MCU, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia hearing about James Gunn’s abandoned Guardians spin-offs. The Ravagers show, a Legendary Star-Lord series, and Rocket & Groot adventures – these ideas had me hooked from the moment they were conceived!

James Gunn significantly expanded the cosmic aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, yet it appears that he harbored grander plans prior to stepping down to co-lead DC Studios.

Fans and critics alike applauded James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with some even declaring it as one of the finest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films to date. The movie enhances our familiarity with beloved characters and introduces fresh ones, offering various storylines and hinting that Star Lord’s tale isn’t over yet.

The fact that James Gunn decided to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe to focus on the expanding DC Universe sparked enthusiasm among DC supporters. However, this move brought some uncertainty about the future of the Guardians within the MCU.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always been excited about the potential spin-offs of the Guardians team in the Marvel Universe. Recently, James Gunn shared that he had envisioned three such stories, and though he may no longer be with Marvel Studios, there’s still a glimmer of hope that we might get to see them one day!

James Gunn is open to the Guardians’ MCU future

In an interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn shared that there were numerous Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spin-offs he wished he could have developed. He expressed interest in a series focusing on the Ravagers, stating, “I thought a show about the Ravagers could be quite entertaining,” referring to the space pirate group who, along with Yondu, kidnapped young Peter Quill.

In simpler terms, Gunn shared that he also had a comprehensive concept centered around Quill. “To put it plainly, we had an entire plan for Star-Lord, the legendary one. And surprisingly, Rocket and Groot were the main focus of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Initially, I intended to start with Rocket and Groot, but was persuaded to work on Guardians 3 instead. Despite this change, I felt it was crucial to tell Rocket’s story. The outcome was a new Guardians film that became one of the MCU’s most heart-wrenching narratives.

Optimistically speaking, Gunn mentions that even though he moved on to new opportunities, Marvel still endorses him to carry forward the narratives of these characters. This means there’s a possibility we could witness some of these projects in the future.

He expressed his enthusiasm for others to explore new tales featuring the Guardians, using these characters as a foundation. He gave his approval to Chris and everyone else involved in this endeavor.

If Chris Pratt is open to playing the role again under favorable circumstances, there’s a chance we might witness one of those projects soon.
