James Gunn may have revealed a secret Superman spinoff with Krypto

Hearing that Krypto was set to appear in the Superman film made us very happy. However, James Gunn clarified that Krypto won’t only be seen pulling his owner through the snow.

(This version maintains the original meaning and flow of the sentence, but rephrases it in a more natural and conversational manner.)

Occasionally, it’s truly captivating when a canine surpasses every actor in its ensemble. We’ve seen it with The Artist, Anatomy of a Fall, and now it’s DC’s time to shine and prove their worth.

In his journey of balancing his alien background as Superman with his human life as Clark Kent, he’s accompanied by his canine companion Krypto. He is partly digital, created using a 3D model of the director’s dog Ozu, and partially real, with Jolene serving as his stand-in on set.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder: Is our “not-so-perfect sidekick” destined to remain so throughout his entire career? If you’ve been following James Gunn’s digital footprints closely, you might have caught wind that he’s hinting at a Superman spinoff in the making.

James Gunn hints animated Krypto Superman spinoff is coming

We’re not discussing DC League of Super-Pets at the moment. However, based on a subtle Instagram post by James Gunn, it seems that Krypto may be getting his own animated series, which is an exciting prospect!

In response to one of Gunn’s Instagram posts, a fan commented, “I’d be thrilled if we had an independent animated series about Krypto,” to which Gunn responded, “Good news for you!

Although it’s possible that the upcoming Krypto short film has been previously mentioned, it doesn’t prevent further extensive projects from being developed down the line. For now, fans should anticipate the first of four planned Krypto shorts in September 2025. As per Gunn, these films will carry a “fun and playful” atmosphere.

A fan shared on Reddit that they genuinely appreciate how Gunn is reinventing some DC superheroes and their companions, particularly Superman, to cater more towards children. They believe that adult fans have unfortunately tarnished the genre in numerous ways.

Another voice chimed in, “I was just contemplating that very thought. Let’s wait and see how it unfolds, but I believe it’s crucial to consider that figures like Superman are primarily intended for children and families. That seems to be the only viable approach.

If it doesn’t contain stripes or Ace, we protest. I fondly remember the old Krypto the Superdog show from my childhood days. A third individual concurred.

In addition to DC comics, Krypto the Superdog initially appeared in an animated show that starred him. Additionally, you may recognize his character as Superman’s companion in shows like Smallville, Titans, and the final season of Superman & Lois.

It’s unclear just how prominent Krypto will be in Gunn’s version of Superman, as the extent of his appearance is yet to be determined; however, the trailers hint that we might see a significant amount of CGI featuring Jolene.

Among the other animate endeavors confirmed to continue are DC Super Powers, Starfire, and My Journey with Green Lantern.
