James Gunn is giving an actor who appeared in the previous DC movies a new chance to star in his revamped DC Universe. Although Gunn is planning a fresh direction for DC films and TV shows, he’s not completely abandoning the past. This decision to bring back familiar faces is causing some discussion, especially considering some previous DC projects weren’t well-received by audiences.
In January, news surfaced that Christina Hodson would be writing the script for the next Batman movie in the DC Universe, titled The Brave and the Bold.
Following some criticism, Gunn quickly came to Hodson’s defense, though he didn’t directly confirm she was working on The Brave and the Bold. He did share that she had been involved with him and the DC Studios team during the initial planning for the DC Universe, and cautioned against evaluating her writing based solely on recent films she’s written but not directed.
She was among the first writers involved in developing the DC Universe. It’s unfair to evaluate my work based on movies directed by others, because they often make significant changes to the original material.

People are criticizing Hodson because her last two writing projects were on the films Birds of Prey and The Flash. Both movies were unsuccessful at the box office and received negative reviews, particularly regarding the writing – which was Hodson’s primary responsibility.
Most viewers and critics found the script for The Flash to be disorganized. It seemed to focus more on including cameos from different universes and relying on familiar moments than on telling a clear, emotionally engaging story about Barry Allen (Ezra Miller). Reviewers often noted that the movie’s tone was inconsistent, and despite the potentially huge stakes of a multiversal crisis, the film didn’t feel impactful. Many felt it was a disappointing introduction to the iconic DC character.
Despite previous issues, James Gunn is giving filmmaker Hodson another opportunity, and it’s a significant one with high expectations. The idea of launching a second Batman movie universe alongside Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves’ The Batman has always felt unusual, especially after The Brave and the Bold was first announced in early 2023.
It’s already difficult to convince audiences to accept two different versions of Batman from two separate universes, especially when their movies are released close together.
The success of the next Batman movie hinges on its quality. After extensive planning, The Batman Part 2 is scheduled to start filming this year, and industry insiders anticipate it will be another strong entry in the series. Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a critically acclaimed comic book movie, so any future installments have a lot to live up to.
It’s a real challenge to balance different visions for the DC Universe. While James Gunn wants to include both Bruce Wayne and Batman in the new DCU, the success of The Batman films complicates those plans.
I’m really excited about the possibility of Hodson writing this new Batman movie! If it’s really happening – a story about an older Batman and his son, Damian, who’s the new Robin – she’s definitely facing a big challenge, but I think she’s up to it. It sounds like a really interesting dynamic, and I’m eager to see how she pulls it off.
Gunn seems to have a lot of faith in her, and the film’s director—Andy Muschietti, if he’s still involved—needs to impress DC fans after the disappointing reception to The Flash.
Given the current reaction to The Flash, it’s difficult to see fans getting excited about the creators working on another Batman movie, or expecting it to be as good as Matt Reeves’ The Batman films.
When Will The Brave and The Bold Release?
Currently, there’s no official release date for The Brave and the Bold, and it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting one in the near future.
James Gunn recently debunked reports that the movie might come out in 2028, explaining that the script is still being written. This is disappointing news for fans eager to see the first appearance of Batman in the new DC Universe. Gunn has emphasized that no DC Studios project will begin filming until the complete script is finalized and approved by him.
According to reports, The Brave and the Bold is a major priority for DC Studios. James Gunn has publicly said that Batman, along with Wonder Woman, is one of his main focuses right now, aside from projects already underway.
Now that Superman has been released and the DC Universe is starting to take shape, getting the character of Batman right for this new world is more important than ever. While both Superman and Batman films are planned for 2027, they will exist in separate universes.
James Gunn plans to give The Batman franchise space to continue before introducing his own Batman story. This likely means The Brave and the Bold won’t be released until late 2028 at the soonest, and more realistically in 2029, to allow enough time between the two distinct Batman movies.
This delay could actually be helpful for The Brave and the Bold. It gives the writers more time to perfect the script, allows James Gunn to carefully introduce this established version of Batman to viewers, and ensures The Batman Part II can be released without immediate competition.
It’s uncertain if a third The Batman movie will be made, or if director Matt Reeves plans to conclude Robert Pattinson’s run as Batman with just two films.
Currently, experts predict “The Brave and the Bold” will likely come out in 2028 or 2029, but there’s no firm date, and it could potentially be delayed until the beginning of the 2030s.
