James Gunn’s first film in the new DC Universe made a surprising change to Superman’s backstory, and the director has confirmed that this change is permanent and won’t be reversed.
What did James Gunn say about Superman’s origin story?
In the commentary for the film *Superman*, director James Gunn discussed why he changed Superman’s beginnings. In the 2025 movie, Superman arrives on Earth carrying a message from his parents, Jor-El and Lara. He understands this message as a call to be a gentle guardian of our planet.
It turns out Jor-El and Lara didn’t just send Kal-El to Earth to survive; they wanted him to carry on Kryptonian traditions and one day lead its people.
According to Gunn, the message is genuine and wasn’t created by Lex Luthor. He also confirmed it won’t be altered in any upcoming DC Universe projects.
Gunn admitted that altering Superman’s origin story was his most potentially divisive decision. As a longtime Superman fan, he was careful to preserve the character’s core traits-his inherent goodness, refusal to kill, love for Lois Lane, and even his iconic hairstyle. His goal was to stay true to the essence of Superman while exploring his beginnings.
The challenge is figuring out how to add something new to the Superman story without altering the core of who the character is. While Superman’s parents are often portrayed as kind and good-natured, that hasn’t always been the case in the comics. Even within established Superman lore, Jor-El isn’t always depicted as a purely benevolent figure.
Gunn explained that he made that choice because he believed it strengthened the film’s final message about Superman.
James Gunn explained that Superman’s origin isn’t something that will be changed later. His parents sent him to Earth with two purposes: to protect people and to eventually carry on Kryptonian traditions and lead Earth. However, Superman doesn’t see himself as a potential ruler, and that’s a key part of his character.
