James Franco-Starrer ‘Hey Joe’ Acquired for U.S. Release by Glass House Distribution

The Italian drama titled “Hey Joe,” starring James Franco as a U.S. Navy sailor based in post-World War II Naples, has been acquired by Glass House Distribution for a planned North American debut on both traditional theater screens and digital platforms.

The rough-edged movie, helmed by Claudio Giovannesi (known for the “Gomorrah” TV series and “Piranhas”), was purchased by Glass House from Vision Distribution of Italy during the Cannes Film Market.

Franco, who has been making efforts to reintegrate into Hollywood following sexual misconduct accusations he addressed with EbMaster during the premiere of “Hey Joe” in Italy, was spotted at the amfAR Cannes gala and made a contribution by offering a painting for auction.

Title Character: “Hey Joe”
Main Character Description: Franco portrays Dean Barry, a 23-year-old American sailor who stepped ashore in war-ravaged Naples in 1944. He finds himself smitten by a destitute local girl named Lucia. After being compelled to depart from Lucia, who was left alone and pregnant, he returns to New Jersey. Years later, Dean revisits Naples in search of the woman and her child, Enzo. However, as time has passed, the city has undergone significant changes, forcing Dean to overcome various hurdles that eventually lead up to an unexpected climax. Franco fluently speaks both English and Italian throughout the film.

Tom Malloy, president of Glass House Distribution, expressed his fascination with the movie ‘Hey Joe’ right from its first showing. He described it as a unique fusion of American and Italian storytelling, and praised James Franco’s moving performance that deeply touched him. He believes this film will strike a chord not only with viewers but also with critics during the awards season.

It’s been announced that Glass House intends to debut “Hey Joe” towards the end of 2025, specifically during the peak of the award season, with a strategy that encompasses both traditional cinema screens as well as digital streaming platforms.

Originating from Italy, “Hey Joe” was jointly created by Palomar and RAI Cinema, along with Vision Distribution, but unfortunately didn’t perform well at the box office after its premiere at last year’s Rome Film Festival.
