A classic film by director James Cameron is gaining popularity online. The Abyss is currently trending upwards on the free streaming platform Tubi.
I was so excited to see that The Abyss is doing really well right now! As of February 8th, 2026, it’s currently number 5 on Tubi’s Top 10 list. It’s a classic from 1989 – I love how it follows a US Navy team racing against the Russians to find a sunken American submarine in the Caribbean, and then they stumble upon something truly terrifying and unexpected. It’s such a great movie!
The recent popularity of The Abyss on streaming proves James Cameron’s influence goes beyond his biggest hits like Avatar. While often overshadowed by films like Aliens and Titanic, The Abyss is still a powerful example of Cameron’s skill for captivating science fiction, and its renewed audience shows his stories continue to resonate with viewers.
Although it wasn’t as huge a hit with general audiences as some of James Cameron’s other films, The Abyss still did well when it first came out in theaters. It earned $90 million, more than double its $43 million+ production cost, and was nominated for four Academy Awards, ultimately winning one for Best Visual Effects.
Even after many years, The Abyss remains highly rated, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ score of 75% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers love it even more, giving it an 83% approval rating based on over 100,000 reviews. Critics particularly admired the film’s stunning visual effects and called it a suspenseful, intense thriller.
Interestingly, Cameron first conceived the idea for the film when he was quite young. At 17, while still in high school, a lecture about deep-sea diving sparked an idea for a short story with a similar storyline. Later, after moving to Hollywood, he decided to expand that story into the movie we know today.
The Abyss Proves Cameron’s Sci-Fi Storytelling Has Always Been Top-Notch
James Cameron’s film The Abyss is currently popular on Tubi, following the long-running success of Titanic. These films demonstrate that even if his Avatar franchise doesn’t continue to thrive after the mixed reception of Fire and Ash, Cameron still has a knack for captivating audiences with science fiction stories.
Despite some criticism, Avatar: Fire and Ash was a major success and likely won’t end the Avatar film series. Even though some viewers thought it was too similar to the previous movies, it still earned over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2025. It also received nominations for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. While future installments, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are currently dependent on the performance of Fire and Ash, director James Cameron has assured fans that they will be made one way or another, regardless of the studio’s final decision.
The Abyss is now streaming for free on Tubi.
