It looks like someone finally turned in his homework on time.
On Thursday afternoon, during CinemaCon – an annual event for movie theater owners in Las Vegas – the long-awaited first trailer for James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Water,” the final chapter in the trilogy that hasn’t faced repeated release date postponements, was unveiled. (It’s worth noting that Cameron filmed the sequels one after another, so we can expect the rest of this otherworldly sci-fi series to be released as scheduled).
At CinemaCon, those present were provided with 3D spectacles to view a sneak peek of the unseen trailer that’s yet to be shared with the general public.
Certainly, ‘Avatar’ has become a sought-after treasure for exhibitors and a movie that could persuade theater owners to upgrade their facilities to play Cameron’s films in the best possible quality. This is because both the original 2009 release of ‘Avatar’ and its long-awaited sequel, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ released in 2022, have each earned over $2 billion worldwide, placing them among the highest-grossing movies ever made. If ‘Fire and Ash’ follows a similar box office trend, ‘Avatar’ would be the only film series to have all three installments earn more than $2 billion. Notably, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has only managed two such films: 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ At present, Cameron is the only filmmaker with three movies that have surpassed the $2 billion mark, with ‘Titanic’ being the other.
The science fiction story, titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” revolves around Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s clan, residing on the moon Pandora. Following the events depicted in “The Way of Water,” this sequel portrays the ongoing struggle between the Na’vi, peaceful blue-skinned beings, and the antagonistic Resources Development Administration. After the tragic demise of Jake Sully’s son Neteyam, he and his kin find sanctuary with a water-dwelling tribe called Metkayina, where they carry on their battle against the RDA. The fresh glimpses of the upcoming film hint at the introduction of the Ash People, a new faction among the Na’vi.
Cameron, the man behind the finishing details of “Avatar 3,” shared information about the upcoming film in a previously recorded video, addressing exhibitors.
I’m regretfully unable to attend because I’m currently in New Zealand, wrapping up ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash.’ Given its imminent release on December 19th, I believe it’s a worthwhile endeavor. I’m joking about the freight train comment, but seriously, I won’t be there. However, I’ll send you a preview reel to give you a sneak peek of the spectacular new creatures, cultures, and emotional depth that our talented artists and cast have brought to life in this project.”
Or more casually:
“Can’t make it since I’m working on ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ in New Zealand right now. The movie drops on Dec 19th, so I can’t really skip out! But don’t worry, I’ll share a sneak peek reel with you all to give you an idea of the amazing worlds and emotional depth our artists and cast have created.
He joked, “The Sully family underwent quite an ordeal in this situation, dealing not just with the incoming humans, but also a fresh challenge from a new group called the Ash People.
In the upcoming film “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” Oona Chaplin (“Game of Thrones”) takes on the role of Varang, the leader of the Ash People. Joining her in the cast are David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh, while Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet reprise their roles from previous Avatar films. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is set to premiere in cinemas just before Christmas on December 19th. Meanwhile, the fourth and fifth installments of the Avatar series are planned for release on December 21, 2029 (“Avatar 4”) and December 19, 2031 (“Avatar 5”).
Additionally, during Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon, they provided sneak peeks for upcoming movies like “Thunderbolts” and “Fantastic Four: The First Steps,” along with “Zootopia 2,” “Freaky Friday,” “Tron: Ares,” and the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch.” All these productions are set to hit theaters before the end of this year.
