A movie previously directed by Guy Ritchie is getting a second chance on Netflix in 2025. Although war films are still popular, this one, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, didn’t succeed in theaters initially. However, streaming services offer a new opportunity for it to find an audience.
Guy Ritchie’s film, The Covenant, is now available on Netflix and quickly climbing the streaming charts. It’s currently the third most popular movie among Netflix viewers in the United States.
Released on April 21, 2023, the film The Covenant was directed by Ritchie, who also wrote the screenplay with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. The movie follows Master Sergeant John Kinley, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and his fight for survival during the war in Afghanistan.
Dar Salim, playing Ahmed Abdullah, develops a close bond with Kinley and ultimately rescues him. The two find themselves helping each other, with Kinley returning the favor when Ahmed finds himself in a dangerous situation. The cast of The Covenant also includes Sean Sagar, Jason Wong, Alexander Ludwig, Emily Beecham, and Antony Starr.
Although audiences generally liked The Covenant when it came out, it only earned $21.9 million worldwide in ticket sales. In the United States, it made $16.9 million, and it brought in another $5 million internationally.
Despite not being a box office success, The Covenant has received positive reviews, scoring 82% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Score and a very high 98% on its audience score (the Popcornmeter). In a review for ScreenRant, Patrice Witherspoon called the film exactly what fans of the director had been hoping for.
Witherspoon highlighted that The Covenant is packed with action and features a powerful score, suggesting it’s the kind of compelling war drama audiences have been waiting for. He also praised the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Salim, describing the film as a moving story about perseverance, compassion, and making ethical choices despite facing immense challenges.
