As a seasoned critic with a lifetime of watching films and observing the industry, I find myself torn between two perspectives presented at Indonesia’s JAFF Market. On one hand, I am deeply inspired by Masha Shcherbakova’s approach to film distribution through community screenings and discussions. Her emphasis on the power of community and her belief that films can inspire change resonates with me, having witnessed firsthand how a well-crafted story can ignite conversations and bring about change.

The methods for distributing films are evolving as time goes by, as suggested by speakers at Indonesia’s first JAFF Market. Experts presented varying tactics for connecting with viewers in this discussion.

Alternativa Film Projects, debuting in September 2023, emphasizes distribution via community screenings and dialogues. As Masha Shcherbakova, impact and community manager of the global non-profit organization, stated, “Film serves as a catalyst for transformation.” Their mission is to grant international acclaim to filmmakers whose work sparks social progress.

Occasionally, the consequences [they opt for] later on are what determines whether they decide to view a movie,” Shcherbakova explained, highlighting the significance of community influence in fostering local film industries. She pointed out that viewers frequently establish emotional ties with films they engage with, further explaining “There’s always an opportunity […] to ensure the topics remain relatable.

Conversely, John Badalu, a programming team member at the Busan International Film Festival and the producer of “Ave Maryam” and “What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love,” offered an alternate perspective on the everyday lives of Indonesian filmmakers.

Badalu commented, “It’s come rather too late for filmmakers’ distribution plans.” He explained that some countries receive funding which facilitates the distribution of numerous films. To secure a decent distribution, one might require a film sales agent. Additionally, he pointed out that in Indonesia, cinemas tend to dictate the number of screens and release dates.

As a strong proponent of this viewpoint, I, like Sebastien Chesneau, founder and CEO of Dubai-based sales agent Cercamon, wholeheartedly endorse the utilization of film sales agents. Newcomers in the filmmaking world are frequently advised to handle distribution independently. However, I urge you to investigate sales agents to streamline your distribution process. When you’re fully prepared, you’ll be well-equipped to identify and connect with the right ones. Compile a list of 5-6 agents that align with your vision, ready for when the time comes.

The JAFF Market occurs concurrently with the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival, specifically in Yogyakarta, from December 3rd to 5th.
