Controversial Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who opposes the current regime, has come back to Tehran with a warm reception from fans after winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes for his latest work “It Was Just an Accident.” This victory has ignited a diplomatic row between Iran and France.
On a bustling Monday morning, Panahi stepped into Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, where he was warmly welcomed by applause. Friends and admirers greeted him with bouquets of flowers upon his descent from passport control, as captured in various social media posts showing the beloved filmmaker.
Upon my return to Iran after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes, a woman shouted “Woman, Life, Freedom” as I arrived at the airport – a powerful statement by @femmeazadi that echoed through me.

There was a heated discussion on social media after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot described Asghar Panahi’s win as “a show of resistance against the Iranian regime’s oppression” on platform X, which prompted a firm response from Tehran.
Esmaeil Baqaei, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, stated that while he may not be an expert on art, it is our viewpoint that artistic events and the broader concept of art should not be utilized for political purposes.
Jafar Panahi managed to journey to Cannes to publicize his secretly filmed movie, following two spells of imprisonment due to “anti-state propaganda” charges, as well as a long-standing ban on filmmaking, press interactions, and international travel for over a decade.
A Regrettable Mistake”
The story revolves around a band of ex-political detainees who seize a man they suspect is their previous tormentor during interrogations. This film, as revealed by the director in an interview with EbMaster, draws inspiration from his own ordeal in an Iranian prison. Remarkably, this production has earned Panahi, now 64 years old, the unique honor of having won the top award at all three significant European film festivals: Berlin’s Golden Bear for “Taxi” in 2015 and Venice’s Golden Lion for “The Circle” in 2000. However, Panahi could not attend these festivals due to a ban that was lifted in April 2023.
Iranian media have largely ignoring Jafar Panahi’s momentous Cannes Palme d’Or victory.
Even though Iran’s state news agency IRNA celebrated Panahi winning the Palme d’Or with a photo and headline stating “The world’s largest film festival made history for Iranian cinema,” major English-language news outlets in Iran, such as Tehran Times and Iran Daily, did not report this news on Sunday.
