Jackie Chan Says ‘Rush Hour 3’ Had ‘Too Much Money’ for the Budget and ‘Too Much Time’ for Filming: ‘Too Much Money Is No Good’

Jackie Chan took part in a BuzzFeed video chat prior to the premiere of “Karate Kid: Legends”, where he was queried to arrange the “Rush Hour” movie series, from his most preferred to the least favored film. Featuring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, the “Rush Hour” films continue to be among the most successful in Chan’s cinematic career. Over a span of nine years, from 1998 to 2007, the trilogy raked in an impressive $849 million globally.

Chan replied, “To be honest, I’m uncertain.” He paused before explaining his thoughts as follows: “Well, the initial project had limited funds and tight deadlines. We just went for it without much deliberation. As for the second one, it had ample resources and plenty of time to work with. The third option was overloaded with both money and time, but excess in either isn’t beneficial.

According to Chan’s review, the “Rush Hour” trilogy mirrors its critical and financial triumph. The first movie, which is Chan’s preferred one, was made with a $35 million budget and garnered a staggering $244 million globally in 1998. Its sequel from 2001, produced for $90 million, did even better by earning $347 million worldwide. However, the third film, released in 2007, fell short despite having a substantial $140 million budget, managing only $258 million at the box office. The praise from critics also decreased with each installment.

Back in 2022, I found myself making waves when I shared that Rush Hour 4 was reportedly in the works, although there’d been no official confirmation from New Line Cinema yet. Around the same period, my on-screen partner, Chris Tucker, publicly expressed his excitement about returning for another adventure.

Tucker hinted to Audacy’s V-103 that an incredible array of material is imminent, taking it up a notch, which excites him. He emphasized that it won’t be the typical fare we’re used to… Expect ‘Rush Hour 4’ to potentially make an appearance in this new project because he enjoys collaborating with Jackie.
